Kelly bluebook vs. Edmunds

I see a huge price discrepancy, Kelly sometimes 100% higher than Edmunds, for the same car listed as 'private party sale', not dealer sale.

(e.g., 1997 Corolla - 120% price dif, 2002 Corolla, 80% price dif)

Repeat, these are both supposedly private sale prices, NOT dealer asking prices.

Why the huge discrepancy? Which is more representative?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
The ultra low mileage on yours may mess it up. I wouldn't worry too much. Your car is probably worth around 3k give or take. It's worth a lot more in transportation to you, though, and probably has not seen too much salt so rust might not be a problem.

Dealers down here us the N.A.D.A. guides. I don't think they have a private seller category, but I've always found them to better reflect the market.

The difference is consistent across miles, years, etc. It must be structural. I'm guessing Kelly's is a dealer service, purposely inflated?

Jon,

I assume you're asking this to figure out tax related matters. I'd say go with the NADA, if for no other reason than that I've seen the DMV cross checking my reported sales figure with a NADA guide in the past.

I'm asking because I'm curious. The discrepancy is too large and too consistent to be accidental.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

If it's a gift, it doesn't matter for income tax purposes.

For registration, I'd lowball it and write it up as needing repairs, which is the truth, since you'll be replacing belts, etc.

Thanks but, really, don't read anything into the question. I'm asking a general question about the two publications and thought someone here might know.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

e.g.

2000 Chevy Impala LS, Private party sale, good condition.

Kelly: 5,735
Edmunds: 3,359
diff: 70%

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Same zip code?

Little Japanese hybrids are more in demand in San Francisco than in Podunk Wyoming where American Ford F250 Pick up trucks are in relatively high demand.

Yeah, same zip code. Same everything, but price.

Yeah, same zip code. Same everything, but price.
Then maybe it's data noise from an unusually low or high-priced sale combined with a small sample size.

That seems unlikely given the consistency of the discrepancy across makes, models, and years.
