Actually, it's not red until it's oxygenated.

And although I don't think there's an upper age cut-off, anemia is so prevalent among seniors that I don't believe a majority of them 70 or above, could pass a cupric sulfate test.

Oh, and one more for D'oh...if one spent three years in the mid-80's in Merry Olde, you are not eligible to donate blood and are considered high-risk...
