PJM and Members Set New Record for Peak Power Use
Jul 22, 2011 11:13 AM

PJM Interconnection, the grid operator that manages the high voltage transmission system in all or parts of 13 states and Washington, D.C., set a new record for peak power use yesterday at 5 p.m. by meeting the demand for 158,450 MW of power. One megawatt of power is enough to power about 1,000 homes.

The previous record for peak demand was set on Aug. 2, 2006. When adjusted for the June 1, 2011, integration into PJM of FirstEnergy's American Transmission Systems, Inc. and Cleveland Public Power, the all-time peak would have been 158,258 MW.

"PJM and our members plan and prepare year-round to handle days like this to ensure a seamless power supply for the 58 million consumers in our region," said Michael Kormos, senior vice president – Operations. "Our efforts in fine-tuning how we forecast electricity demand and plan transmission improvements are paying big dividends for our system operations."

Yesterday's demand for electricity was met without problems and generation supplies were adequate. Demand response was not called on to reduce load. Temperatures are expected to remain high today with power use forecast to be close to yesterday's.

I suspect a few other records may have been set during the recent heat bubble.

Newsman said it was 89 in Pittsburgh around 1pm today.

My car said it was 101. I know 89 and I know 101. It was 101.

ZOOOOOM!
Still dips down into the 40s here at night. And with a total lack of insulation or central heating that means that with my P.O.S. space heater, I can warm my room up to a toasty 51 or so. It's the high ceilings that make it impossible to warm the place up. It's an old school Victorian house so it has high ceilings and a bed that sits on on raised stilts. It's so high up because back when the original residents still used the coal fireplace on the opposite end, they didn't want to die of carbon monoxide suffocation in the middle of the night so they raised the bed well up from the floor.

The nice thing is that I have a great huge down comforter that's fantastic for staying warm. So fantastic, in fact, that you overheat and build up a nice sweat, unless you play the game of trying to ventilate the covers by awkwardly positioning yourself throughout the night.

In the morning (well okay, I wake up 'bout 11:30 to noon usually) I'm all clammy, more often than not. And my room's still pretty cold by then but it's about 68 degrees outside so I just go outside, warm up and dry out in just a couple minutes.

It's all just stupid.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
