If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
It looks rather interesting - much more full-featured than Facebook. Anyone try it yet? |

What did you not like? Was it too buggy or unwieldy? |

I'm really enjoying it. It works particularly well for me since I have two focuses for which I use social networking (education and photography). If anyone wants to add me into a circle, my gmail is: dolmansaxlil at gmail dot com. |

I went ahead and 'joined', if that's what you call it when you click on the invitation link. |

I too have a Google+ account. (Thanks Warren!). I never did much of anything with facebook, but I like the idea of the circles Google+ offers so I wanted to try it out. Haven't done much with Goggle+ yet either... Shoot me a PM if you want an invite, and assuming they're still available (as they are right now) I'll send you one. (Please include your email address in the PM). Edited by Dan, Jul 28 2011, 07:47 AM.

I signed up but haven't really used it. I've heard that Google lays claim to copyright for everything posted, so I'm leery of it for my photos and academic work. Dol, do you have concerns about your photos? |

I have no concerns. Scott Bourne is a remarkably talented photographer. I follow him on Twitter, I listen to his podcasts, and I admire his work. He's also kind of a douche, and very out of date in some areas. The photographers I most admire - those who are talented, making great money as photographers, and who do rely on photography for their livelihood, are all on G+ (and Twitter, and Facebook, and Flickr, and 500px, etc). Several of them license many of their photos as Creative Commons, which means people can use them non-commercially for free. And they're making a good living as photographers. I had concerns initially - and even posted about them on G+ - then I read a lot of articles about it and did some digging, and decided that I was being an idiot. ALL social networking platforms need terms of service agreements that state they own everything you post, they can use it for anywhere, and that they can post it anywhere else. Could the terms use some clarification? Yes they could. But Getty Images has stated that they're fine with its artists using G+ even for photos that Getty has licensed. Their terms are VERY strict - I have several photos with them and it has significantly altered what I can do with them - but I can still post them on G+. That means that Getty's legal team isn't concerned with Google using them in a way which will hurt Getty's sales. And let me tell you, their lawyers are VIGILANT. If you're going to post something on the internet, there's a chance someone else will use it in a way they shouldn't. There's nothing you can do about that. But Google's Terms of Use isn't much different than any of the other social networking sites. Heck, even Zetaboards' user agreement states: "Any content uploaded or posted to ZetaBoards may be displayed on a forum by ZetaBoards. You grant ZetaBoards the right to display and store the Content you provide." Can one infer that this just means that you're giving them permission to put the content where you post it on a forum? Yep. Could it also be argued that they could post it elsewhere without crediting you in any way? Yes it does. If you don't want your information/photos/art to be used in a way you wouldn't want it to be, then you shouldn't put it on the internet ANYWHERE, regardless of the 'protection' that some places argue they provide. I, for one, feel that these types of forums, social networking platforms, etc are far too valuable to give up. And that includes their value as a marketing and money-making tool - even if someone steals one of my images every now and then. |

Privacy concerns. G+ looks superior to FB to me, but I am worried by what Google can do by combining all information they have about me. I use gmail, their search engine, their calendar, and other Google services. They use some of these profiling information on G+ and even make these partially public (e.g. "Klaus +1d this link") in ways I can't understand or control. Google makes great products, but even if they mean no harm it is rather frightening what they could (deliberately or by accident) do by combining the profiles they get from their various services. |

Thanks for the explanation, Dol -- if you're comfortable with it, that gives me a lot more confidence. BTW, congrats on the Getty contracts! Very cool! |
