Worst call in baseball history?; ...or was it the right call?

Last night (or rather, this morning at 2am) in the bottom of the 19th inning (you read that right), the Braves won because the home plate umpire called the runner safe.

At first glance, the runner looks 100% out, and by his body reaction, if I *HAD* to bet, I'd say he was.

Barely.

But look at the replay again (replays start at the 1:00 mark), the umpire may have actually called it correctly. Not only is he the closest person to the play, but the catcher's "swipe" of the glove may have actually missed the runner.

There's lots of hate going around for this umpire, but if you look closely...he may have been right.

And the "worst call in baseball history" was seen on a few headlines. I can think of a few others that were "worse" pretty easily. First coming to mind is the Galaraga's blown perfect game by the 1st base umpire last season.

My first reaction was 'who gives a sh1t, it's just baseball'. But that's not fair. So let me modify that to 'who gives a sh1t, its only regular season and there's 10,245 games in the season'.

Yeah, he seemed out. Catcher thought so, and the runner thought so.

So my comment above was rather flip, but at least one game doesn't matter much in baseball.

I think he's safe, the more I look at it. The glove doesn't move during the swipe, and even if a thread of the glove touched a thread of the runner's clothing (yes he would be out), it's such a bad tag that they deserve to have the runner called safe, IMO. The umpire also has the best view in the house and he didn't see any contact during the swipe of the glove.

Either way...you're right just one game of baseball. Not as bad as this Pirates/Braves ending during the 1992 NL championship. Braves come back in the bottom of the 9th to score 2 on a base hit...the last run scoring just barely made it in before the tag. Braves go onto World Series because of that call (a good call, mind you).

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I have no idea how the catcher could not have tagged him. Needs to be seen in slo-mo HD though...

My guess is the ump wasn't getting paid for OT and wanted to go home.

I think he is safe. WHereas their bodies certainly touched, it looked to me like he missed the runner's torso with his glove. Right call.

And that catcher should be mightily embarrassed to miss an easy tag like that.

In all fairness to everybody involved, nobody was on the top of their game at that point.

But the ump did say, upon seeing the replay, that he thinks the runner was out.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Umps almost always give ambiguous tags to the defense, as long as it looks close enough... that was a bad call and I agree with IT's clever explanation. :lol2:
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Of more immediate concern is the fact that the Buccos are within spitting distance of winning the division and moving on to the post season. Perhaps that California preacher was just off by months?

No joke.

What is this, the 70s?

That's true...many times during a double play, the short stop only has to swipe his foot above the bag before throwing to first. Although sometimes you get an ump that follows the rules. B-)

Just curious, Aqua.

I assume you hadn't heard, in Australia, about the Pirates? I can't imagine you checking the scores online....

Right on Milwaukee's heels last time I saw. Knew they were number one for awhile.

Okay. I would think Pirates news would not travel much past the shores of America, even on our best days. Even on the internet.
