ZOOOOOM!
|
There's this coffee shop less than a mile (yes, I still think in miles) from my place. It's without doubt the best one in all of Sydney and the list below illustrates precisely why. 1) It's not staffed by pretentious barista rockstars or apathetic high school kids, but a nice Chinese family; the parents run the place and the kids work here when they're not in school. Likely the nicest people you'll meet here. 2) Free Wifi. By comparison to back home it's something of a rarity here, so that's such a great bonus. 3) It's on the way to and from everything; for me it's a perfect location. 4) The dad's into country music. And I don't mean bluegrass, I mean the real cheesy honky-tonk stuff. Currently the speakers are blaring out "People Are Crazy" by Billy Currington. I hate country music. Would mock it incessantly as a kid when it'd be playing in drugstores and on the radio. But listening to it here, in a coffee shop clear in the opposite hemisphere is like being back home for a short while so it's fantastic. The dad mouths out the words, you can tell he wants to sing along but spares his customers the agony. I wouldn't mind if he did. |

Very cool Aqua. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

charlie daniels band lucinda williams willy nelson.. waylon jennings the bellamy brothers the judds any brothers for that matter... i love my older country music.. my kids think I am crazy. I used to go two stepping all the time and played pool in DEEP country bars where they would never think of beating a woman on purpose (there is always hope they thought). I stopped going. The type of training they were doing was very good. They took a different approach than my school back in D.C., but it was no less effective. The instructor was very good as well. Not only was he very knowledgable, but he was an all around good guy. As were most of the students. Most of the students. The school has a very informal setting, and I understand the aversion to atmospheres that are over-disciplined; I don't like them, either. But one of the advantages to at least some kind of structure is that it can help foster the right attitude. In my old school, it was considered very poor form to speak negatively about another school. One never made comparisons in that way. And never in your whole life would you consider speaking negatively about another student, either directly at him or if he was not present. The majority of the students at the school here understood this, either formally or otherwise, but the few that didn't ruined it for me. I miss it quite a lot but I'm not sure what to do. It's not like Wing Chun schools are on every street corner. I'm thinking about picking up another type of martial art here but I have to be very careful to choose the right one. If it's not compatible with my prior training it would take me a LONG time to readjust, and what I learn will seem too contradictory to what I'm used to. To be honest I'd like to pick up some form of Escrima but I dunno how open folks around here would be to teaching a foreigner. |
