HDMI question

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I run my laptop (HP Pavilion dv7) as a virtual desktop with an external 25" LCD monitor, connected by HDMI.

I want to run my 28" lcd TV as a monitor, which is HDMI equipped, to watch streaming netflix on a dedicated monitor.

The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, which allows for 2 displays simultaneously

NVIDIA does not recommend or support HDMI splitters, but could I use an HDMI splitter from the laptop, and run the monitors separately? Would the NVIDIA card typically handle multiple monitors through the HDMI channel, or would that require other software, or would I need a different graphics card?

If so, should I get a splitter with a power amplifier to boost the signal (something like this)?
The dogma lives loudly within me.

I can't answer your question with regard to a direct connection from your PC to the TV, but would you consider a wireless connection?

If so, Netflix supports these:

Roku has a device for $60, I think.

HOLY CARP!!!
HDMI splitter -- useful only if you want your external LCD monitor and TV to mirror each other, cannot support showing different content on the two screens connected to the splitter.

Thanks, Ax -- I thought that might be the case.
