Nah, just a voracious trashcan reader. Only the truly addled will pick up a Foxfire book, a Murray Leinster novel from the 50's, a Stephen Ambrose work on George McGovern's WWII aircrew, and a bit of Plutarch's Lives this week. |

Should be everyone's goal. The mistake many make is that they try to appear intelligent through the use of pretentious-sounding diction, and as an added bonus most of these types end up using words incorrectly. But the goal should always be to express yourself as clearly as possible. That's why it can help to have a broader vocabulary; more words in the rolodex means a broader range of choices for you to express yourself.
That's not really true. The ideas are just as important, but the point is that they are expressed within the confines of an established structure. I mean it's not for everybody--I hated poetry for quite awhile, myself--but it involves many aspects; the "word puzzle" part of it is just surface stuff. |
