From George's link:

Quote:

Police said they were still searching the suspect's Oslo apartment Saturday. An AP reporter said officers were keeping a close watch outside while technicians worked inside. About a dozen people, including journalists and neighbors, were hovering outside, but were not allowed to get close to the building.

Andresen, the acting police chief, said the suspect was talking to police.

"He is clear on the point that he wants to explain himself," he told reporters at a news conference.

For God's sake, don't give him a platform for his views. Let them die with him.

That was exactly my thought, too. Having read the survivors' accounts, I have a feeling that he left some of those survivors on purpose, so that they would then tell the news how awful and scary it was. More press for him. It's all really awful.

Most everyday people don't have the guts to engage a threat, if it means you might have to take a bullet.

I've been in that type of situation (not anywhere near this thread's situation, though) and you would be amazed at the sheeple mentality.

Exactly.
This is not a nation where people tote guns or live with their minds constantly in defense-mode.
It's an awful horrific tragedy.
I trust this fellow will be dealt their justice.

He will be dealt with without spectacle and with carefully controlled media coverage. The way it should be. The Rupert Murdoch's and Ted Turner's of the world will not be allowed a media free for all.

Won't that be refreshing.

Unlike the Casey Anthony case where a haranguing media has made it impossible for a person acquitted in our courts to live a relatively normal life. Now we will be stuck with her as a celebrity of sorts for a long time.

I don't recall much of a media spectacle around the McVeigh trial. He was tried, convicted and executed. Almost as if he were fast tracked to the death chamber.

He declined any appeals other than those required by law.

Exactly.

These are not people that go around shooting each other all the time. Not a situation they likely contemplated ever encountering.

Oh, should have read the rest of the thread. That's been said.

BBC has audio clips of victims who survived.
It's heartbreaking hearing them tell of playing possum with bodies falling on them and smelling the sulphur of the rounds.

I'm no voyeur. I'm not listening or watching. I hope Norway can stifle all outside media from nosing around in their own business. Imo, this is their business and doesn't need further attention. Their families, loved ones have my sympathies.

I respect that.

I did listen to some clips, and heard one teen talk about how much it helped him, knowing the rest of the world cared. That made me cry.

This is so horrific. I need to keep reading, hearing, because it's important to me to keep thinking about these kids. Maybe it's because I have a kid who is just 20, maybe it's because I live on an island and can imagine people jumping in the water trying to swim to safety.....maybe it's because this is one of the most upsetting events I can think of.

But I do agree, and hope that outside media is kept at a comfortable distance.

Police labeled the attacks as acts of terrorism punishable by up to 21 years in prison according to Norwegian law, the Wall Street Journal reported. Norway does not have the death penalty.

Does Norway really lack the legal means to keep this guy locked away for the rest of his life? That doesn't pass the sniff test.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

It is astonishing how effectively this one person has altered the future political landscape and the balance of power for a generation of Norway.
He wiped out a lot of his opponent's political DNA (children of left politicians) in a few hours.

Sick and evil as it was, it was very effective, brilliant even. (Calm down; I am not praising him!)
Besides elimating future politicians of that party he has instilled fear of retaliation into the surviving politicians.
Having your children murdered HAS to affect you, especially if you have other children you'd like to see survive.

This will move Norway to the right, towards xenophobia and intolerance of diversity.

I can't help suspecting that a few TNCRers are privately cheering.

It may, but I doubt it. I suspect if anything it will move them farther left. Being associated with the right will, undeservedly, have a stain on it for a few news cycles.

I really doubt it. This will taint the right for some time, I suspect.

But I agree, he planned this well. Mill's quote from his blog/facebook, was quite telling. "One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests."

Well, in this case, "One person with a gun is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only beliefs."

It will be fun to watch gun control debates now.

The maximum sentence in Norway for any crime is 21 years; I read that he may be out in 14 years. It's a big controversy, because Norway just doesn't have the legal code in place to put him away for longer than that.

Calm down: I believe that Norway has a similar system as Germany (where the limit is 25 years) - namely the device of preventive custody (called Forvaring in Norway). If the official punishment runs out, but the detainee is still considered a threat to society, he or she can be put in preventive custody indefinitely (until he or she is no longer considered a threat).

So, the law says we can only lock you up for a maximum of 21 years, unless we feel that you're a danger - in which case, detainment can be indefinite. Do I have that right?

Some interesting statistics:

Quote:

Citing the "Small Arms Survey 2007: Guns and the City," published by Cambridge University Press, the website give the rate of private gun ownership in Norway as 31.32 firearms per 100 people, less than the reported rate in the U.S. of 88.82 firearms per 100 people.

Five homicides committed with a gun were reported in Norway in 2005, the latest year for which the site has data confirming firearm-related murders in the country. In comparison, the U.S., which has a population more than 50 times greater, had 10,158 gun-related murders the same year, or 2,000 times that of Norway.

I have a request - please don't turn this into a thread about gun ownership.
