I was thinking we needed this thread when Vince posted about a good Italian red.

So here goes. Right now I am drinking Spanish Tempranillos. 2009 Senda 66 and 2007 Venta Morales. Great wines both. The former is around $9, the latter $7. I was drinking it in Ann Arbor for like $5.

ZOOOOOM!
Know why they call them "spirits?" Sounds a bit metaphysical, does it not?

Alchemy. A "spirit" was a volatile substance that appeared, during its interaction with other substances, to be quite clearly alive.

After alchemy had its stint, and modern science started to develop, Victorian pharmacists adopted the label to mean any kind of alcoholic liquor.

Ta-da, spirits.

Sorry. I don't know jack about wine. This is the only way I could contribute constructively here.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Red Rice
HOLY CARP!!!
Peter Lehmann Shiraz is our usual evening wine. Well-balanced for a Shiraz and inexpensive.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

So Vince, what Italian reds are you drinking? I love them myself. Fantastic wines and still a lot of bargains.

Roero, Massucco Azienda Agricola, from Piemonte is what I had last night. But I have to say after my trip to Spain laft year your choice of Spanish Tempranillos are fast becoming my faves.
One of the wines I had there was from a winery called Torres.
I found them here in Jersey. I especially like this one,
Torres, Sangre de Toro 2008. Bought 6 bottles after I tried it the first time.

Ah yes, the Blood of the Bull. A long standing bargain in Spanish Grenache! Torres is like the first family of Spanish wine. They also make a very reasonably priced Corona that I think is Tempranillo. Their black label cabernets are fantastic but pricey.

I've mentioned this wine before, but since we're talking Torres, and it's summer, I thought I'd mention it again. Slightly chilled, on the deck, whilst munching on some yummy shrimp appetizer that Vince is serving. Perfecto.

Why is a thread called the TNCR Spirits Book about nothing but wine?

Next week, I'm going on holiday to a couple of miles south of the Scottish border. I won't be drinking wine.

Mrs. D'Oh just bought an iPad for the flight - I don't think she's realised it's going to give me access to TNCR when we're on holiday.

I made Chicken thighs, with loads of fresh veggies and tiny potato's, and even a couple small fresh tomatoes. And tons of Spanish Paprika.
Serving: Montecillo Crianza 2007 Rioja from Spain.

Fortunately, I have two bottles. My building's elevators have been out since 4:00 PM because of the power shortages caused by the heat wave. So we appear to be stuck here.

Yeah seems to be fine. None of the lights seem to be burning as bright as they should be. Someone just tapped on my door, the elevators are working. The wine was wonderful.

Hey, Vince, with that wine you shouldn't be drinking and elevator riding anyway. :silly:

Bought three bottles of Artero, Merlot/Tempranillo, 2008. I could not resist it in the store when I saw it was from La Mancha, Spain. Who could. I'm drinking it as I write this and it's so good I'm going back to the store tomorrow to buy a few more.
It was about $10.00 10% off because I bought a mixed case.
Great with red meat. I'm serving tonight a London Broil on the Forman Grill.
