HOLY CARP!!!
That article made me wonder if there could possibly be any abortions in Israel...so I looked.
There are.

It would be cheaper to prevent all these Israeli abortions and hand over the newborns...

I thought Israel was already having trouble finding room within its borders for its population, hence the settlements.

yes there is a certain irony in that.

abortions have risen wth russian immigration, as many russians grew up in a society where abortion was a form of birth control...

however, looking at your chart, and comparing to say...california or new york, i see that the abortion %, which i presume is percent abortions to live births, its about 11% in isarel compared to ny 35% and california 28%. (arizona, for IT's sake, is 10%) so i dont know if the abortion rate is so high comparitively here, although thankfully, with all the religious issues we have in our politics, abortions are not one of them.

as for population and settlements, settlements are not a result of over population, we have plenty of room for all those in settlements in the west bank, the reason people went to settle is ideological, and to some degree economic, but not a result of congestion.

I see that as a very positive development, and I like the emphasis on family and kids. You read every day about the problem of declining birth rates in the developed countries among the educated.

Bach, why do you think Israel's single payer (if that is what it is) health system works without bankrupting the country, and would it work here?

israel has a nationalized health care system like the whole civilized world (except one notable exception) payed for through automatically deducted social security payments, if u r salaried, or by bi monthly payments for self employed. its mandatory to have health insurance, not optional.

that is not to say that the system is perfect, as there r many problems which still need reform, we have a shortage of hospital beds, a shortage of doctors in the periphery, etc etc, but overall the system works. in addition, its a two tiered system, as private insurance is also available and this covers the perks of private medicine. i basically have two jobs, my public academic university hospital job, and my private practice, which is more boring but pays the bills.

how come the system is not bankrupt, i dont know. there is alot of expenditure on health, but we could spend more if the defense budget wasnt so high, and dont forget we are taxed at about 50% even from very low thresholds. plus a VAT of 15%.

anyway..we pay alot, standard of living is lower then the states, but we get good cheap healthcare.

would it work in the states? i would try on the state level, on a national level the country may be just too big and heterogenous. but thats for another thread.

and finally, no doubt that fertility gets a big big preference here, for the various reasons mentioned in the article.

The standard of living is lower? That's interesting. I've not heard that before. What would you say are the major differences? Is it auto ownership, size of home, that sort of thing? Is there better public transportation?

i would think the standard of living in the states is amoung the highest in the world...

here houses are certainly smaller, salaries lower, cost of living expensive.

but quality education and healthcare is cheap.

so go figure whats best?

no clear answer on that...

Clearly a matter of taste, but the net flow of migration seems to be Israelis coming to US, is it not?

No, there is no clear answer. But I can't help but remember that the country seemed stronger when our standard of living was not quite so plush.
