This is something I have had for years and thought it was a great way to handle those people who like to gossip and it is so destructive .....we all have folk in our real lives who enjoy this pastime... So I have used this 'test' to make sure I don't hear any Gossip....just thought I would pass it on...

Socrates' Triple Filter Test

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said,
"Socrates, do you know what I just heard about your friend?"

"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test.
It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're
going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and...""All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though,
because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness.
Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"

This is why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

( It might also explain why he never found out his best friend was sleeping with his wife.)

HOLY CARP!!!
1. Is that historically accurate?

2. (Historical accuracy aside) How many "filters" is something suppose to pass to be deemed worthy of retelling? All three, any two out of three, any one will do?

When someone approaches me with 'have you heard about ________( insert someone’s name) I will always respond with' is this something I actually need to know'?..... It’s amazing how this stops people in their tracks and then they take time to think if I do need hear whatever they want to tell me and it is good that many also then say' Maybe I won't repeat what I heard as it may not be true anyway'......I dislike gossip with a vengeance..

Wondered about that myself.

But, along these lines, some of the best advice I ever read for fending off nosy questions was from Ann Landers' column. Just look at the asker with a puzzled face and ask in return, 'now why on earth would you want to know that?'.
