Happiest of birthdays, Dewey -- may the second half century be even better than the first.

Happy birthday Dewey!!
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Happy Birthday Dewey!
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

HOLY CARP!!!
Thanks, folks! It's been a good day, overall. It was a pretty hectic night at the hospital; one oncology death, two hospice deaths, and an apparent drowning/possible homicide in the ED. I got a nice note from another chaplain who had stopped in to visit a patient who I had seen in the middle of the night about a week ago. She had gone through some unusual pain in a leg about a year ago and subsequently lost the leg. Now she's feeling the same pain in her other leg, and while they were running tests, she was having an anxiety attack in the middle of the night, worried she was going to lose that leg, too. She was a person of faith, and she was upset that she was going to lose her faith over this, trying to understand why "God would do this to her" when she was a person of faith. We ended up getting into a conversation about that subject, and I tried to help calm her so she could get some sleep. We talked, and prayed. She felt better after we talked, being able to tell someone honestly what was on her mind and her fears and worries, and she was able to get some sleep. Last night, I found the note in my mailbox, saying that this chaplain had gone in to speak with her, and she told him how much I'd helped her that night a week ago, and that she just wanted to thank me again. That was a nice birthday present.

Got home from work around 8a, slept until about 1130, then got up - never really got cleaned up - got back to work on the sermon, watched a little TV. The TV gods must have known it was my birthday, so they treated me to one UFO/aliens/zombies/paranormal/ghost hunting show after another. Slept some more. Then Nineteen came over for a while. We were going to get together for a nice birthday dinner, but since my (now two) paychecks STILL HAVEN'T ARRIVED, AFTER BEING PROMISED MULTIPLE TIMES!!!!! :mad2: I couldn't afford that. Still, she brought me a very nice card, a carrot cake (a particular weakness of mine), and a cream puff as big as my head, plus the best gift of all, just herself. After she left, I slept about another half hour, then got up and argued with IT and Larry a bit while simultaneously putting the final touches on the sermon. Now I'm rehearsing it in my mind.

I have to get to the church extra early tomorrow, to get a few things done that I didn't get done yet (my schedule was originally to get there today, but my body said no to the 2-hour round trip). Then the Adult Ed and the worship service, then home, and we'll get together for dinner tomorrow - a nice, but inexpensive fettucine alfredo blowout.

Life is pretty good. ^_^

HOLY CARP!!!
Happy B-day!
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!
