HOLY CARP!!!
As an ERB admirer (I wouldn't say I'm a fan, exactly), I was wondering how Disney would be able to film the John Carter story, which really belongs to a different time, so that it would be able to appeal to a modern audience. I have to say, I like the trailer a lot; it's gorgeous, and has a moody, melancholic feel that really appeals to me. But again, I wonder how it'll play to movie-goers used to less literary, more adrenaline-soaked action films.

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Looks to me like that won't be an issue, since all they did was actionize and presumably water down yet another pre-Information Age Sci-Fi story. Same old thing: reshape the classics to fit the mold.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I was worried about this, but the trailer is reassuring.

Eh, not to me. :P

But ah well what the hell I'll still see it regardless.

I saw the trailer yesterday. Looks kind of interesting, but time will tell. It does look a bit actionized to me too.

Ehhh. Looks a little too Conan for my tastes.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Never read the original (never read any ERB actually) but I'll get it on my free iPad e-books and check it out.

Ah, Edgar Rice Burroughs. So, I didn't see any "John Carter" book. Which one is this based on?

Actually, the trailer for the new Conan movie looks like a hot mess. I can't believe they've made Conan look so boring.

Has anybody seen the new Conan in HBO's Game of Thrones? He's playing Kal Drogo there. He doesn't seem to have much screen presence.

True! But still, if it doesn't have the line: "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women", then it's not a Conan movie!

Aw, c'mon. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Arnold had screen presence back in the day.
