It's interesting how much the feel of Australian slang has in common with British slang, particularly East London - quite a few of the words are shared in British English. |

Very true, being initially 'hatched' in East London and within the sounds of Bow Bells which gave me the dubious title of a Cockney, I used a lot of the Cockney slang in my early years but it has disappeared from my vocabulary now..mind you some of the Aussie slang got me into a whole heap of trouble initially…in the UK if someone is not well they said they felt queer…so when I met my first ‘unwell Aussie’ I said I was sorry that he felt queer…the look on his face was priceless and someone quickly stepped in to explain to him that I meant something quite different by using that specific word. Ah happy days !!

ZOOOOOM!
|
Yeah, I got in a bit of trouble using that word in one of my classes. "Loaded!" they said it was. I said I don't give a sh!t how un-PC it is, it means weird. You can't erase a 500-year old word because of the negative connitations of the past 50. I didn't change it. It was pointed out to me again in my final draft but no points taken away. |

Did you ever play the game "smear the queer" growing up? (For those that don't know, it's kind of a game of tag, where one person has the ball and runs around trying not to get tackled, if they get tackled, they have to throw the ball up for someone else to try and grab and then try to run away without getting tackled.) I remember my parents saying "Don't use that phrase" to our bewilderment. No idea of the homosexual connotation. Same with them saying "Don't say that" when we said something "sucked". Had no idea it was related to BJs. |

HOLY CARP!!!
|
I remember analyzing a poem in English Lit class that contained the line "Let us queer him"; the context was that two men trying to unfairly criticize the work of a third man ("queer" meaning to spoil or ruin). The interpretations the class came up with were quite interesting. Not often that the phrases "butt-fvcking" and "gay @ss" are thrown around so freely in English Lit class. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

One other word that is used in Aussie is ‘root’ and in the context of replacing the F word….now I didn’t know this when I first came to this country, so imagine the looks I got when I said’ I had been rooting all day in my cupboards’?....in the UK it simply means one of two things, the ‘root’ of a plant or tree…..or to search for something.….' to 'bang' someone is also a word that is used to replace the F word...

Not sure of the context, but I definitely like the direction this thread is taking! Let's root about in it. |

That joke about the panda that eats roots, shoots and leaves makes much more sense in something other than British English. |

That is the best joke. And I don't care how cool Tad is, I don't want to touch him. |
