Fascinating collection. I would've loved seeing those costumes up close. So interesting to see the materials used, the construction, and design.

Women today are larger these days. It's not all body fat. I'd guess height, muscle mass, bone length, density have increased over the generations. Babies are born heavier, longer. Of course our diets now are lousy. We all know this.

Sizing was a lot different back then. Patterns from the early 1960s or earlier show size 14 measurements were 34-26-36. This article says her bust was 34, and it's always been said that she wore a size 14. Nowadays, a size 4 measurements are 34-26-37-1/2.

That's why in the old days there was no size 00, 0, 2, or 4. The designers have just changed the sizing over the years so that women can feel more vain about themselves and delude themselves into thinking they're smaller than they really and in the meantime sell more clothes that way!

That's the part I don't get -- women would buy clothes regardless of the "size" is, wouldn't they?

Marilyn always seemed petite to me. Well-proportioned curves, but not especially busty or full-figured, unlike, say, Jane Russell.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

The smaller the size, the better women feel about themselves. The better women feel about themselves, the more clothes they buy.

I have to agree with the sizing=spending. It's not that women wouldn't want to shop or buy clothes. They're just more likely to buy something they want (but don't need) if the sizing doesn't make them feel bad. It's the same reason why most women, if they aren't positive about the size in a store, will guess high and take that size into the fitting room. It's a lot easier to say "Could I get this a size smaller, please?" than it is to ask for a size larger.

Y'all ain't rocket surgey.

You're hard-wired to admire pretty baubles. You find money to be the best aphrodisiac. You place financial means ahead of looks, when considering with who you will mate.

What did I leave out?

I think it's fair to say that Marilyn Monroe didn't exactly feel great about herself.
