I'm going to train for the 2012 Nation's Triathlon.

I like Mik's plan. With a 19 year old Brazilian of course.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Now that you can breathe (still off the smokes, right?), you'll do great!

Yep. That's kind of what's behind this. A couple of weeks ago I decided to start working towards getting rid of the 10-15 pounds I picked up after I quit smoking. My goal is to be below my quitting weight by September 2nd, exactly one year after my quit date. So, I started jogging with the dog a little, and taking time by myself at the pool to start swimming laps. Yesterday, I was leaning against the pool wall gasping for breath and letting my body recover from the whopping 2 laps that I had just completed, when a guy that had to have been in his 70's and weighing closer to 300 than 200 got in and starting swimming laps as pretty as you please. 16 laps, 800 meters. Wow. Made me feel pretty pathetic, so I'm going to do something about it.

i don't know.... be careful... maybe the 2014, if there is one.

I've known my share of overenthusiastic midlifers who've gotten pretty hurt.

my BIL is a triathlete.. an iron man. he never tells anyone.. just goes off and does it. His brother did it with him and died early of a sudden cancer (perhaps due to lipitor).. otherwise a freak thing.
it behooves me to behold

Ha. I thought these midlife crises things couldn't be planned.

For me it happened when I drove by, slowed down, pulled this U-turn, drove in to this Honda dealership. Then next thing I knew it was, "Hey honey, I bought myself this really cute shiny black truck." He nearly flipped. And yup, I'll still feel 10 years younger driving
the thing.

Good luck LD. It looks like a lot of fun.

You wanna see flipped? You shoulda seen Rachel's reaction when I told her about the 19 year old Brazilian girl coming to live with us.

Eventually (I'd say about 10 days to 2 weeks in at the latest), your body will get a lot better at anaerobic recovery and you won't feel nearly as crappy or winded. In fact some folks even get addicted to that endorphin increase.

Great goal, man. :thumb: As opposed to getting a sports car, your increased health will be something of real value. (And heck, the medal would be nice too methinks.)

Just remember to keep it fun.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Heh. Perhaps you need a 19 yr old Brazilian 'personal trainer'? My truck was preceded by mine, a 27 yr old. I'd say he 'lives' with us. He's sure woven his way into our family life. I still see him every week. And he makes me feel young again. It was the best mid-life-decision I made. That was March 30th, 2005.

I had originally thought to put it two years out, but when I started researching training methods, mostof them were saying you could go from the couch to the triathlon in 3-4 months, so I figure a full year should be enough.

Two things I've learned so far:

1) Technique is key, both in swimming and in running.

2) There really is such a thing as "the wall". It used to be that when I would start getting close to my limit, I'd start getting a little tired and that would increase until I hit the limit. The last couple of runs, I've been going fine, feeling like I could just keep going. Then I get a little past my previous mark, then Wham! It's like an invisible forcefield that just sucks all of the energy out.

I'm starting to think again that the DC one might be a bit too much for just 12 months, so I'm coming up with a more reasonable goal. I just found a whole series of triathlons that start off small, but build up.

(all links go to this year's race as they haven't posted 2012 info yet.

The first is in March; it's a 1.4 mile run, 4 mile bike, and 250M swimming. http://www.triitnow.com/tuneuptri.htm

I'm hoping to be well above all of those numbers by March, but this will be more a matter of learning how to put them all together, and the actual logistics of participating. Depending on how that goes, I'll then go down either path A or path B.

Path A:
I have to double those numbers by June: http://www.imathlete.com/events/infinitivetri2011

If I'm still doing well, I'll shoot for this: http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1702

That's a 750M swim, and it's in a lake and not a pool. If I can pull that one off, then I think I might still stand a chance at September. If I can't, I'll move on back over to Path B.

Path B is simply continuing to participate in the whole series of smaller triathlons every in Manassas every month http://www.triitnow.com/TIN_triathlons.htm , and start working towards 2012.0

Great run last night. Came home soaked in sweat. M&M's wanted to know why that made me so happy, and I told her because a few weeks ago, I wouldn't have had the stamina to build up this much of a sweat.

Proper breathing is going to be my biggest problem in swimming.
