I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

That's very interesting. i wonder what that could amount to for a large company over the course of year.

Of course, this guy was using ballpoint pens for his comparison. Would it be as valid for tech that we use today, such as inkjet and laser printers?

I don't know for sure what other variables would come into play, but I would think it would be close.

Too bad there are about seventeen dozen other considerations that go before ink usage when determining which type to use. ^-^

Interesting test but I don't think it should factor in.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

That depends on your focus. If you are an author or publisher, sure, there are far more important considerations. If your aim as a business is to reduce expenses this could well be the number one, given that the information is transmitted whether in Garamond or any other font.

It might be cheaper to just fire the bloke who does the corporate feasibility studies for this type of thing.

John's right. Probably just some dodgy engineer, anyway.

very interesting in that I redid all our templates with Garamond just this last month. I think it is gorgeous, readable and elegant for both screen and print.

I got the idea to change from somewhere... i don't recall.

very readable.

I see I have successfully baited you! Dr. K, consider yourself thoroughly baited!

My landlady used to be a typesetter, back in the old school days when the profession was run very much like a guild. (VERY interesting stories about that, btw.)

I dunno if I'm up to the challenge of naming 9, but here are some:

1) Monospace fonts, such as Courier, are used in SMF because one can easily assume a set number of characters per page. It also spreads out the text and makes editing not only easier and faster, but also it allows an editor to determine ahead of time about how long a project will take.
2) Serif fonts are more decorative and elaborate than sans serif fonts, and are used in more permanent forms of writing, as opposed to cleaner fonts used in stuff like advertising campaigns. They take more ink but that's not really the point, it's about that pizazz.
5) The blackletter scripts used pre-printing press were always a compromise between readability and speed of duplication. Obviously, from looking at the texts written then, they didn't give any sort of crap how much ink they used.
F) Newspapers traditionally go with highly proportional fonts, so that they can fit more words on the page. It doesn't have to do with saving ink per se, it's about minimizing that page count, a much more important consideration.

Now, for Joe Homecopier, none of that really makes a difference. But I still maintain that in This Digital Age, one should still use a font according to the nature of the text. (And on this I think you'd agree with me. How many resumes written in Comic Sans would you take seriously?) As it happens I'm a big fan of Garamond but not because of the ink thing.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Whoa, hey, now, there's no calling for that. :P

Had I Googled anything, the list would have been longer. I don't like forum deck-stacking, I'd much rather say something here, be wrong about it and get called out than pass myself off as a Wikipedia scholar.

John's right. Probably just some dodgy engineer, anyway.
Typically, companies use someone with an MBA to carry out this kind of front-line research - there's two good reasons. Firstly, the MBA has more experience with this type of critical work, and secondly it keeps them occupied and hence less likely to interfere with something important.

I use Garamond a lot; it's my go-to default font for all the church's print stuff. A no-nonsense, very easy on the eyes serifed font, but with a slight bit more sophistication than Times New Roman and its derivatives.

Aqua, I appreciated your going from 5) to F), but I believe it would have been more correct to first have used f) or VI). ^_^

Made me remember my high school chemistry and physics teacher who always enumerated lists "A," "B," and "3."
