Luke knocked 4 seconds off his best freestyle time, and won his heat.

He knocked about 2 seconds off of his backstroke and came in second.

He swam the kickoff leg in the relay and they finished second.

These guys kill me, some of the best of the best in his age group are swimming 25 meters in under 18 seconds. That blows me away.

Shaved a second off of the freestyle and won his heat, 2 seconds off the backstroke but came in 4th, would have won his first heat of the year in breast stroke (but got a DQ because of a bad kick), and was moved up to the A Team in the relay, and more than held his own as they took first.

He's likely going to be moved up to the top heat for Freestyle, and it will be interesting to see how he responds to the tougher competition (he has a tendency to perform up or down to his competition). When he's no longer winning the heats immediately, will he try harder or regress? We saw signs of both last year.

He's also being prepped to start competing in butterfly sometime within the next couple of weeks.

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Went backwards on his Freestyle by a half second today and took 2nd place. Backstroke stayed the same, and he was still on the A relay team, and they took 1st again. The big news, though, was taking first in breast without a DQ!

The coolest part was the lack of a DQ in the breast stroke. Some people are starting to talk to us about getting him into year round swimming and coaching.

Ok, I know you guys are getting tired of hearing every single result, but last night was great. I told him if he beat any his previous times by a second or more in any of the three strokes he was competing in, then we would go to the movie of his choice next week (Transformers or Green Lantern). He asked about what if he did it on all three, and I told him we would to both then. So he knocked 2.5 full seconds off of his best freestyle (he's only 2 more seconds away from qualifying for the top "Champ" level in the league wide meets), he knocked 4 seconds off of his backstroke (still not his greatest stroke, but he needs to work on it because next year he'll begin competing in IM's), and a full 9 seconds off of his breast stroke, and coming in with a time that will qualify him for Champs Division in the All League Meets.

The All League Meets are set up with several different divisions to give the kids an opportunity to compete in a more equal setting. Champs is the top level and was created primarily for those kids that swim year round in the more serious leagues. If Luke qualifies for that, he would be one of only a few in the past ten years that wasn't participating year round.

So they were off for a week for the 4th, and didn't have a meet until last Saturday. Coach tells us that he's done extremely well, but at this point of the season and development, we're talking about shaving off tenths of seconds, and if he can take off another half second between now and the end of the season, that would be remarkable. So what does Luke do? He knocks another 2.3 seconds off of his freestyle. He's now qualified to compete in the Champs division. At the beginning of the season, 16 seconds seperated him from the best freestyler on the team in his age group. Now? 1.8.

Do swimmers carb load before meets?

Actually, in a way it sucks that he's in the Champs division. In All-Stars, he would have had an excellent chance to medal. In Champs, we're likely hoping for somewhere in the middle of the pack.

If you call a big honking donut covered in sprinkles from the snack bar after warmups carb loading, then yeah. Otherwise, we haven't really been focusing on that at the age of 8.

The night before a cross country meet, the kids eat lots of pasta to load up on carbs. I don't know what swimmers are supposed to eat the night before a meet. I can imagine they wouldn't want to eat too much an hour or so before the meet.
