HOLY CARP!!!
Today was the first day on the job. In talking about this earlier, there was one thing that was discussed here earlier that would have been a tragic way for my job to start. I can't talk about it at all, but suffice it to say that that tragic scenario is *exactly* what my very first pager message was about this morning.

They knew it was coming as of yesterday, so they tapped two other chaplains to be the primary point person for this so I wouldn't have this dumped on me on my very first morning - although I was involved in the paperwork. Very sad situation.

Beyond that, it was a very fast-moving and interesting day. Overall, a very good first day on the job.

95% boredom and 5% sheer terror.

Welcome to my world.

Congratulations, Dewey. It'll get easier as you do it more and more.

No, it won't.

Yes, a big part of my job is to help provide relief to people in pain, kenny. I'm sure that's what you meant. ^_^

Sorry, kenny, not going to bite to provide you with trollish entertainment tonight. Best check the TV listings instead.

The day was really interesting. Got to meet lots of new folks and learn some of the ins and outs of working in the ED. Dealt with a couple of codes, two deaths, and several patients and families. Released several bodies from the morgue, working with funeral home staffers who ranged from professional and respectful to disgustingly undignified. Got to help a patient who had been through so many procedures over the past number of years that he was just tired, and in tears, and wanted it all to be over. Got to visit with some of my friends on the unit where I'd been assigned as an intern.

Yes, it was a good day. Looking forward to going back tomorrow morning.

I thought you'd been doing this for a while? Or were you interning before and are paid now?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Jon - Yes, from September through early May, I'd been doing Clinical Pastoral Education - 400+ hours of internship that is a required part of the education required by both my seminary and my denomination for ordination. That's over now. The upshot of it is that once I've completed that one unit of CPE (fulltime accredited hospital chaplains must have at least four such units), I'm eligible to work as a paid part-time chaplain - and I asked for, and was offered, just such a contract gig. In this capacity, I'm involved in a lot of what the staff chaplains are responsible for that the interns aren't typically involved in.

Sounds great, Dewey, congratulations.

Any chance you could land a full time gig there at some point?

Good on ya, Dewey! It's going to be hard work in so many ways, but very needed.

No, not unless I want to do three more units (essentially, adding an additional year of education) of CPE, which I don't see happening. Most importantly, while I enjoy the work and know it's an important form of ministry, it isn't what I sense is my primary calling. I actually like the fact that now, I'm split between part time parish ministry and part time chaplaincy. But when it comes time for a single full time call, I sense my call is to the parish. But, you know what they say - never say never - so even though I'll think it, I won't actually say it. ^_^
