The classic biography is Douglas Southall Freeman's 4 volume behemoth which is over 2000 pages. It was published in 1934. There is a 1 volume abridged version. I waded through the 4 volume one years ago. Probably more detail than you will ever need. Emory Thomas's bio is a good one with more recent scholarship (published in the mid '90s). |

I read and enjoyed reading Shelby Foote's set. Also read Carl Sandberg's bio on Lincoln. I recorded the Lee and Grant - watched April 1865. That was good. |
