I've been posting about this for a while. Remember the Propofol shortage? We still have the SuccinylCholine shortage - that was supposed to end in .. February. |

Article indicates one solution is to open the US market to manufacturers in foreign countries. Good idea or bad? |

Agreed. Our ability to do any sort of quality assurance is nil overseas. We have enough trouble with counterfeit drugs as it is. |

No one seems to have problems with cars made overseas. Or airplanes. Or cell phones. Or TVs. In fact, there are people on this forum who have stated they won't buy an American car ever again. So why not drugs? I'll wager that more than half of the electronics used in an ER is sourced from outside the US - just try finding a semiconductor made in the US. |

Interesting. I know the one drug I am on is made in Ireland and shipped over here by an American manufacturer so there must be a way to keep things safe. How about Canada? |

It might surprise a few of you to know that they have a fairly well developed pharmaceutical industry in Europe. Some of the really rich parts even have Quality Assurance systems in place. |

No problems. Anything from Western Europe also meets standards. And Puerto Rican stuff is good (long story behind that one). |

Agreed. But that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about drugs from nations where the labor costs and safety standards are a lot cheaper. You can usually tell if your car is not what you paid for. You cannot tell if the blood pressure medication you take that prevents further damage to your health is impure or even contains the drug you expect. |

After working quite a bit with electronic manufacturers based in China and India, I wouldn't want to take drugs that were made there. |

So why is it that people claim they bought lemons from US car makers? If they could tell, they wouldn't have bought the car in the first place. Isn't it funny that Apple can get a quality product out of China, but drug companies can't be trusted. |

My job is to assess electrical industrial products for compliance with safety standards. There is definitely an issue regarding their current approach to safety-critical issues, particularly if they don't understand the requirements, or the reason for it. Where an American company will ask lots and lots questions, and eventually do what you tell them after complaining vociferously, a German company will go into massive amounts of detail in explaining how they meet the requirements, a Chinese manufacturer will typically smile and nod and say 'right, OK' and then do nothing - or, in one case, try and reverse a change that I'd forced them to make, by sending in a revision request to a different engineer. There's also a big difference in the consequences of a dodgy iPod and a dodgy batch of aspirin. |

The consequences are different, but similar end results. Dodgy iPads and iPods, and Apple goes down the drain with a lost reputation, as does the aspirin manufacturer. I'll wager that many more people are injured in the US by incorrectly administered drugs, than are killed by dodgy drugs. |

Perhaps one solution to shortages then, is to open up the American drug market to all countries except India and China? |

What we really need is generalised legislation to prevent countries from making stuff they're not particularly good at. Chinese pharmaceuticals, German comedy, English food, American beer....and so on. |

"Propofol's a great drug Mom!" That's what my kid said last week after getting 4 wisdom teeth extracted in hospital. Funny, I remember saying that when I had mine out. Milk of amnesia. |

Mr. D'Oh, you have to be mistaken. You can find some excellent micro brews in the US. |
