If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Tell me why I want Lightroom.. not snarky, I have been considering such a package to improve my shots. Just wonder what it will do for me at what cost of my time. |

Mik, I would recommend Lightroom over Photoshop for the amateur photographer. It does batch processing, it's more accessible than Photoshop, and it's still extremely versatile. My wife, who is a serious hobbyist photographer, loves Lightroom. |

I'm going to disagree with Schindler, kinda. I LOVE Lightroom, and do use it in conjunction with Photoshop. However, most amateurs get by just fine with Photoshop Elements. Here's the deal: You know what Photoshop does. If you want to make any correction to a photo, you can with Photoshop, whether it be using all-over filters, layering, or tiny detail work. Photoshop also has computer graphics stuff that most amateur photographers don't get into. Lightroom is an organizational tool. There are some broad processing things in it - mostly for all-over filters, etc. You can do corrections like exposure, etc in it. I do 95% of my post-work in Lightroom, but the biggest benefit of it is the organization element. Photoshop Elements is a combination of the two. It is an organization tool, and it also has most of the functions of Photoshop that an amateur could ever want. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Lightroom. But for the regular amateur photographer who is interested in getting better shots and doing some correction/filters to get certain effects, PS Elements is all you'll ever need, and it's only $80. If you get really into it later, and decide to jump into Lightroom, you can still use it in conjunction with Elements for your fine detail work. But I wouldn't spend the money on Lightroom if you're basically taking family photos, vacation shots, etc. And remember - Lightroom alone will NOT let you do any of that fine detail work like cloning over a distraction, etc At least not with any precision. That's not what it's made for. Yes, the price that George posted is AWESOME. But you'll need another program on top of it. Elements will do both for you, without a big drop in functionality for the amateur. Edited by dolmansaxlil, May 30 2011, 01:22 PM.

I love Lightroom as well. Besides image processing, it is excellent for organizing large collections of photos. Photoshop is more powerful in editing pictures, Lightroom is better in organizing pictures (while still providing the most important processing options). I got my Lightroom license for 79 Euro - being a university employee, I qualify for their academic program. |

Lightroom is a serious tool, but it's also very intuitive. It lets you play with and discover processing techniques in a way which is interesting and fun. For the amateur photographer, I think this might be its best "feature". I started processing my photos on Lightroom soon after I first bought a digital camera (about 2006/7). I'd tried a few other programs (such as Bibble) and didn't like them, but I immediately warmed to Lightroom. I don't think I would have found processing RAW files quite so fun or easy to get into if I had to use something else. |

This is VERY true. Lightroom is more intuitive than PS, or even PSE, though Elements isn't bad to work with at all. |
