HOLY CARP!!!
My high school salutatorian scholarshipless daughter finally landed something!

She was able to get a full ride scholarship to study in China (Dalian) for five weeks this summer! She also landed a position in with "Student Sustainability Initiative" that will pay her more than working as the barista in the coffee shop and will use her mad skilz in design and artwork. So, she's going to stay at school over the summer. The new job starts in the summer and she'll be able to keep the barista job at the same time and both will work around her five week absence that starts in July.

So, anyone have any keen insight into the best way and least expensive way to travel to China? She just needs to get in and out of Beijing (flying in approx Jul 15 and then out around Aug 14). Everything else is being taken care of by the program she is in.

Another cool thing is that she has made friends with a Chinese exchange student staying with friends of ours this year. Hongyang is from Beijing and will be there when my daughter is there - they might even be able to fly back on the same flight as Hongyang is coming back to begin college in the U.S. this fall.

I hope nobody suggests a slow boat.

Congrats!

Need to get JBryan, Jon or maybe Ax to see this thread.

Vince on the other hand would probably recommend a cruise!

Yes, I just see this thread, congratulations!

As for getting cheap tickets to/from Beijing, do you have a Chinatown in your town? Find a travel agent in Chinatown and go from there.

Good luck!

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I went by China Southern, round trip in premium economy class -- pretty much like business class, very comfy -- for $1750 round trip. The travel agent was in Los Angeles -- contact Dicky@dynastyworldtravel.com He took care of the visas as well. I think they are an official government travel agency or a PRC front or something...

And I am thrilled for your daughter!

Kincaid, that's terrific - congrats to Daughter! Weirdly enough, Fifteen is also going to China this summer, for two weeks.
