So I take it that you wouldn't object if this Harold Camp and his cronies get hauled before the courts on fraud charges. That is what this whole May 21 scam is; crooks hiding behind the guise of religion to make fast money.

Well, I guess you consulted the source I quoted as well. But I'm just teasing you a little ;) When your posts begin to look like ITs posts, they start to look less authentic and I get suspicious ;)
:D

Since it should be obvious that I don't speak Latin or Greek and neither does IT, it's pretty obvious that *both* of us are relying on information we gather as we defend our views, but the source you quoted wasn't one of them..

It's OK, Larry, I read both Latin and Greek, Larry. I understand the language structure and the way verbs get conjugated. So when you said "rapturo" was in Thes, I just read from my Vulgate and found that you were wrong. And actually for help in obscure Latin conjugations, Wiki has a great database : rapiemur vs rapturo.

And thanks for that other site, that confirms that my reading of Latin was not too dusty. :thumb:

Dewey, Larry and IT are constantly publishing their version of their groovyness, but they don't take responsibility for their version as being nothing more than their version.
They externalize it and say they are just aligned with universal external truth - then fight over what that is.
It's not my version, Kenny, it's the Catholic Church's version. That's why I am a Catholic, and you are a Kennyist.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

I find many of the larger theological arguments to be mostly irrelevant.
Glad to see you're coming around. :whome:

Which TNCR Christians do you think would be taken?

I'd say apple, Kincaid, Friday, Brenda and MS.
Let's see whom have I forgotten?
Add Dewey, and take out Brenda. She has lust in her heart.
Jon is so much more interested about me now. Hmmmm ..... what does this mean? :lol2:

Religions are made up and agreed with...not that there's anything wrong with that.
Actually they're made up and *not* agreed upon.

So, where's this f*cking rapture, then?

My lawnmower stopped working this afternoon, so I think it may have been taken - God loves my lawnmower more than he loves you lot, but I think we knew that already.

In other news, I just wasted $460 on a bloody saxophone mouthpiece! Go me! I was going to tell Mrs. D'Oh after the 6pm watershed, but the little-un told her first, so my world ended at 2.30 this afternoon.

You can come here and sleep on the couch, John. I have a nice assortment of whiskeys that we could share. Picked up some Glenmorangie, GlenRothes and some Yamazake.

THere's that Templeton Rye stuff too....

I won't even let Sidney sh!t on you. Seems that you've already had that happen to you today.

... the writers of the Bible were not Roman Catholics.
Brings to mind the following comparisons:

... the drafters of the US Constitution and the US Declaration of Independence were not Americans.

... the author of Dianetics was not a Scientologist.

... the principal teacher and "savior" in Christian mythology is/was not a Christian.

I was going to say "Templeton Rye on the keyboard", but since D'Oh has stood me up, it's just cheap crap.

Jumping in WAY late, and I'll admit I only read to about page 3.

IT was right originally that the rapture is a 19th century invention in terms of its Theology. It isn't an "old" idea in the Church, and isn't one that has been taught for 2000 years - it is a new idea, parting ways with centuries of teaching beforehand which took a different view.
Right or wrong, it's safe to say that the Rapture isn't an old Christian idea, and isn't part of the religion's dogma - it's a theory put forth recently, that has many followers.

Yes, Paul clearly describes being "caught up" in 1 Thessalonians. The meaning is debatable, as he doesn't go into describing the act of the rapture. The focus of the passage in fact, and what Paul was addressing, were fears that people had about "zombies" rising from the grave, and being somehow forgotten after Christ's arrival, as they might be wandering around trying to figure things out. To put their fears at ease, Paul describes clearly that at Christ's return, everyone will be together - don't worry about it. The context of the passage is that the dead will be "caught up" first - and then we'll join them. Don't worry - your ancestors won't be wandering around looking for you - they'll be right here - not forgotten.

Whether rapture Theology is valid or not is inconsequential - indeed none of us know, and none of us *are* to know what will happen in the end. We're urged strongly not to worry about it, not to fret, and not to fear. So it's relatively safe (and pro-Christian) to criticize or question those who claim this level of gnosticism to know precisely the date/time of the rapture.

My point here isn't to debate the validity of the Rapture Theology - but simply to frame it in context. It isn't something all Christians believe, and it isn't something that Christianity in general teaches - at least, not in the majority of the Christian nations and cultures around the world over the last 2000 years.

I don't claim to know what will happen, and I don't want to know either. Thinking about the end of the world and what that means for each of us is potentially fear-inducing, and I think this is why the Church has often tried to urge people not to be too concerned with this, as it leads us in a direction we don't need to head in.

As for Revelations - we've had that discussion many times, but the book contains many facets, and is very apocryphal (confusing on purpose). It's last in the Canon for a reason.
Interestingly, it was always the most fascinating to me, because it seemed so vague and cryptic, that I wanted to understand its secrets. Growing up it seemed lots of Christians spent time worrying/thinking about the end, and what it all meant, using Revelation as a means to facilitate this. I was utterly amazed to join the Orthodox Church - the folks who considered themselves so original and old-fashioned, doing what the Church had always done - and find that they hardly ever even mentioned this book. No discussions, no worries, no questions about what it all meant. They almost seemed to avoid reading it altogether. The services are made up almost entirely of readings from the Psalms, and the Gospels. This is in stark contrast to the ideas of Revelation, and a very clear statement of which ideas should be grabbing our focus.
That was helpful for fearful old me - the realization that I don't need to worry about such things.

I've picked it up again after pretty much a 15 year sabbatical, so it sounds pretty bloody rusty at the moment. However, I'm loving playing it again. The decent mouthpiece is something I wish I'd done a long time ago.
