Wow.... If you hold such derision for Larry's points of view, one wonders why you spent the last three pages dicking around, then.

It's like you're a constant authority on every little thing, KB. If anyone disagrees with you, or has a different point of view, you write them off as automatically wrong -- Not from any kind of understanding of why they may hold their own point of view, but simply because they've had the absolute temerity; the utter audacity; to disagree with you.

I hope I can be a know-it-all, someday. Wait: No I don't. Nevermind.

The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Until this discussion, I wasn't familiar with the term catholic (small c). That, coupled with KB's small c/large c error in his early post had me confused for a while, but now I think I understand the distinction he is making.

KB, is this what you are referring to?

Quote:

The first known use of the term "the catholic church" (note the small "c") was about 110 A.D.; in a letter from an early Christian leader, Ignatius, to the [Church of the] Smyrnaeans:

"...even as where Jesus may be, there is the katholike ekklesia"...katholike ekklesia is translated "universal church" or "the catholic church" or "the one and only church"....

By the beginning of the 4th century, the descriptive (adjective) "catholic" became the popular name (noun) of the Church of the Christians: The Catholic Church.

Source: http://catholictruths.com/blog/?p=17

The last sentence describes when "catholic" became "Catholic Church". At that point, those were the only Christians, so no confusion.

What you're saying, I think is that Christianity started out as "catholic", and all Christian faiths continue to be "catholic" in that they are one church in Christ. The fact that the Catholic Church is known by that name is just to confuse matters. j/k.

Oh carp, I see things have gone downhill since I started this post....never mind. :leaving:

Do you make these things up as you go?

I try to debate things with you and take the time to formulate arguments and responses thinking that there is some equal ground there, all of the time telling myself that your personality is difficult to interact with, but that what you're trying to say is valid and perhaps correct, so I should listen.
But then you say things like this above, and it makes me think that you perhaps have absolutely no idea what you're talking about with regards to Christian History.

Apparently you're not aware that the Roman Catholic Church believes itself to be the one and only true church.

For all I disagree with KB, which is a lot, covering much of politics and all of religion, I think that's an unfair characterization.

Ok, maybe not about the part of being an authority on every little thing :whome:

But he's fine and respectful with disagreements and will admit to error when shown to be wrong like in virtually every argument I've had with him.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception deals with the birth of Mary, and her isolation (without getting into the mechanics of it) from original sin, while the Feast of the Assumption is the feast of the virgin birth.
Just two different, and often misunderstood/confused ideas.
i always thought the the Assumption* was 'Mary's being taken up directly to heaven,... the virgin birth really not having anything to do with it'

Perhaps it is different in Eastern thought.

*1. the taking up of the Virgin Mary (body and soul) into heaven when her earthly life was ended

My understanding is that there were multiple interpretations from the earliest days.

I probably am a little unfair, but to debate with someone, and then say their point of view is laughable... What a slap in the face.

I think you're right about the Assumption, apple. I think the Annunciation is that conversation with Gabriel regarding the virgin birth.

In all fairness, Larry has long professed, on many occasions, that he is a heathen. Why are folds still trying to pit him in the catholic church?

Ax, I call myself a heathen because I like women, I like to fight, I can and will raise hell with the best of them, and I don't always practice what I know to be right. Not because I am aligned with some organized group called "heathens".....

Nah, go to your settings page and change it to 50 posts per page. That cuts it right down to a manageable page number. :lol2:

Larry, Frank, et. al,

Sorry - I must've let my emotions get the best of me.

Thanks for the correcting Frank.

I probably could've said nicer that I thought Larry was over his head and grasping at straws. He may not've been as well - that was just the feeling I had.

Should've not jumped in to begin with, but seeing your characterization of how I'm coming across on this forum leads me to think I need to rethink a bit of it.

Anyway - forgive me Larry, and Frank, and anyone else whom I've offended.

Yet another reason why the apocryphal books are worse then worthless. You find this kind of nonsense in them. There is nothing in scripture to support the notion that Mary ascended to heaven, in fact, it is as unscriptural as it gets.

But it makes a damn fine yarn for the school kids and has, I am told, plenty of darn good theology to support it.
