Larry: Have been several times - Brother and his wife live there - both worked many years in the industry. My SIL as a songwriter (published), and my brother as an FOH engineer for one of the larger rigging companies there - toured with a number of well-knowns.

Nashville is definitely a hot-pocket for exceptional musicians. And there are a lot of people there who "get" music in a way most performers never do. I still think the overall number of what I would consider "exceptional" musicians is strikingly few.

Some consider amazing musicianship to be getting lots of notes right, or playing music that's technically difficult. For me it's a lot more, and very few have it.

I agree with that, for sure.

You are correct on that point as well. I'll even go a bit further and say that most musicians don't "get" music.

Yeah - I think that's exactly what I was trying to say originally.

Every time we've visited Nashvegas and go to a local hangout, I'm amazed at the caliber of who's just hanging out jamming. Last time we were there and went to BB King's for dinner downtown, knowing we'd get some local lineup on stage. I forget who we ended up seeing there, but it was a legendary blues musician - and it was clear that Nashville truly has a *lot* of talented musicians in it.

It's just that out of all of the musicians - especially out of all of the famous ones, there are surprisingly few who really speak the language of music very well.

That's because a lot of the famous ones don't need to write, or even provide input into, "their" music. They just have to hit the notes.

Correct.

Clods like me are the ones who tell them which ones to hit..... :D

Every day, sometimes five minutes, sometimes 5 times, sometimes from music, but more and more improvising a jazz standard.
I know I'm playing nicely when my daughters sing or dance along, or come over and ask if they could learn the piece.
Every morning the soul is once again as good as new, and again one offers it to one's brothers & sisters in life.

I was just getting back into it (after a hiatus of maybe a decade) when I joined PW, but didn't last long. Other interests, etc etc. Maybe someday.

I get a lot of requests from my kids, too. I ignore them and play anyway.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Since burning out on the sax, I've discovered (a little too late, as it happens) that I need to play something for my mental health.

I have seasons (no Yamaha jokes, please :D ). I'll step away from playing for awhile while concentrating on other things, like my school work right now. Then, I'll sit down, dust off the fallboard and sleep with the old girl for a time.

Most mornings, I'll hop on and practice a bit while the coffee's brewing.

Something about playing right out of bed is refreshing. No clutter in the head. Just play.
