I'm getting an iPad - free; Really.

Our hospital is implementing CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry) in June. It's going to be a nightmare, because the system we have was the cheapest, is most user-unfriendly, counterintuitive software imaginable. We went with computer-based charting about 4 years ago, and though it's made some things easier (accessing labwork, etc), it's made many more things more difficult: notes written by consultants frequently aren't available for up to 24 hours, so I end up wasting a lot of time trying to find out things that would otherwise be in a paper record. But, uncle said, "No, you must go EMR."

I've had to complete 24 "learning" modules to familiarize me with the new system of entering orders (each was about half an hour). They were singularly unhelpful and confusing. They taught me nothing about how I'm going to enter orders, and all the other docs I've spoken to have been similarly confused. The overall sentiment seems to be, "I learned nothing, and I suppose I'll learn when I actually use the system." In other words, "I'll burn that bridge when I come to it." Tomorrow evening I have to attend a 3 hour class, which will, hopefully, give me an actual feel of how this'll f*ck up everything I've done for the last 30 years really work.

But...

As a way of bribing us token of "thanks," the administration if giving every staff member who completes the "educational" material before we "go live" in June a voucher for an iPad. All I have to do is walk into the Apple store with the voucher, and I get one.

I assume it'll be the WiFi 16 gig version.

Do I need 3G? I do fine without it on my iPod touch.

Is 16 gigs enough?

(padding posts here)

I'm glad I didn't spring for one last year, and I'm glad I didn't get the v.2 when it came out this year.

I've looked at the AirTurn for my sheet music and it looks intriguing. Are there any other good sheet music apps for the iPad?

I got the 3g just in case I might want to use it. That was about a year ago, I haven't used it yet.

If I remember correctly I think you don't get some GPS capability without the 3G, although that might have been some bad information.

It's not like the hospital is losing money on this, by the way. Uncle is "incentivizing" hospitals to go 100% EMR, from what I've heard, and they'll probably be ahead, especially when you consider all the hassles they'll save after the system is implemented.

I have a rather limited set of orders that I write: Pre-op meds, labwork, consultations, etc., so my frustration level will not be nearly as high as some of the primary care docs who have to cover every possibility.

I have a GPS in the car, and use it rarely. Browsing the internet when I'm driving is probably frowned upon.

(more padding)

I imagine that they'll give us vouchers for the basic model, and if I want to upgrade, I'd have to buy it myself and eBay the one I get from my hospital overlords.

Spent 3 hours at the course this evening.

The good news: I got 7 hours of CME for my efforts (3 for the course and 4 for the computer-based-learning courses I did at home. Only 43 more hours to go for the year.

The bad news: I have to wait at least 6 weeks for the iPad.

Oh, yeah, the system is the SUXORZ as much as I thought. This will be horrible.

I don't think I have a choice as to what they'll give me. It'll probably be the 16 gig.

Wanna buy it when I get it, and I'll buy the 64? :lol2:

George - if I had the $$ to purchase an iPad right now, I'd get exactly what your voucher will be for. I think you'll be perfectly happy with the 16GB WiFi version.

I feel her pain.

We're currently implementing an EPIC system...as George said, Uncle Sugar's payin'. Thank goodness our guys took a best of breed approach and let us keep some of the legacy platforms...at least the LIS, RIS and admit software will remain the same.

So, let me get this straight.

The federal government is paying for your computer systems?

WTF? Have any names I could talk to about getting a kick ass system paid for to install in every 9-1-1 emergency operation center in the country?

The finder's fee would set you and your descendants up for life for a couple of generations or more!

Re: whether to get 3G ...

I'd go 4G (LTE).

That thing automatically switches between 4G and 3G, and you can put your WiFi iPad, WiFi iPod, WiFi MacBook, WiFi anything on it.
