Closest I will get to the amazon; a canoe trip through the everglades

HOLY CARP!!!
Just got back from visiting my parents in Naples, Florida.

My parents and I decided it would be fun to canoe around the everglades.

Yes, it was cool. Parts of the trip were very narrow, though, and our canoe frequently crashed into the roots of the trees. If you haven't seen them before, they looked something like this:

I regret screaming as loud as I did when I first saw how many spiders live on the roots of these trees. Panic is contagious. Still, when several of these buggers are six inches from one's face, well, it's hard not to say something forceful.

That spider is gorgeous! Did you see any reptiles?

I am not usually good with photos, but here I am, emerging from the tunnel of terror.

Yes.

We saw a mother alligator and her 20-plus babies, about 8 inches big. With so many, I have to think it was a kind of daycare, but how can you know for sure?

We saw a bald eagle carry off a medium-sized fish.

We saw lots of exotic birds. And fish.

Skeeters were not bad at all. I have a few small bites on my legs is all.

We had to do a 180 and head back through the tunnel of terror. To scare away the spiders, I played some Dave Matthews on my iPod. I'm not sure if that's an approved technique, but singing along kept my mind occupied.

I kept telling my mom and son, who were in front of me in the canoe, to "thread the needle, baby," and make it through without crashing into the spider covered roots. And I mean covered. Creatures everywhere.

On the way back, we did pass a panicked lady, going the opposite direction.

She was older (maybe 60?) and had on lots of bright lipstick. Her hair was coiffed and her eyes were a bit wild with panic. She yelled something to us about losing a key overboard, could we keep an eye out for it.

We got well out of earshot from her and I yelled to my mom and son what was really going through my head, "Look, lipstick-lady, we have bigger fish to fry here. Have you seen the gigantic spiders on these roots?"

Thanks.

The guy immediately behind him is my 10-year old who bakes bread (a loaf currently being made) and repairs and creates everything. The guy farthest from me is my dad, whose natural habitat is a golf course with a scotch after the 18th hole.

Here is a view of my mates: my mother and my 12-year-old.

Husband had to stay back and work. We were taking pictures with our phones and texting them to him. In between screams.

Bunch of freckled people head into a tropical outdoor adventure?

SPF 70.

And yes, we are still sunburned. But only mildly so.

Glad to hear it's not too bad for the burns. That can ruin a trip pretty fast.

Actually, wild animal wise, you were a lot closer to the Amazon than you think.

Have you hugged your Burmese Python today? The Everglades now contain hundreds of the giant non-native snake. The Everglades is a good drop off place. People drop off their pet Burmese Pythons and other exotic pets when they get too big or are no longer wanted. See the “The Elephant In The Living Room” if this subject interests you. It’s a recently released documentary film about the exotic animal pet industry. I saw it last week. Spiders were the least of your worries.

I'd be more afraid of the spiders than burmese pythons for sure - though typically the really pretty looking orb weavers like that aren't poisonous (I don't recognize that exact one).

Sounds like a truly awesome experience! Glad you all got to experience that together.
