What if 1,000,000 is the limit?

Do we even know if the forum can handle 1,000,000 posts?

What if the whole thing shuts down?

Do we have a backup plan?
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

The world as we know it is predicted to come to an end. Whether we subscribe to divine intervention or self-destruction has no relevance. The fact of the matter is that many people believe Armageddon will come. The best we can hope to accomplish is the survival of ourselves and our families.

Following these simple guidelines may prove invaluable when the world is in constant chaos.

Difficulty: Challenging Instructions
things you'll need:
short wave radio

riffle & ammunition

3 months supplies

3 month food & water

gold & silver

horse

tent

wind generator

1
Avoid Immediate Dangers: When the world comes to an end there will be some immediate concerns that you should consider for your safety. The first being nuclear power-plants. If shut down, the dangerous power-plants instantly become a ticking time bomb. This is because the water used to cool the reactor will simply evaporate. With no water to cool the reactors a melt down is inevitable. Unless you know how to dispose of the radioactive waste safely you will want to move your family as far away for these stations as possible. This may prove challenging as many people don't know where these reactors are. Carefully research your safe zones now before the Apocalypse comes.

Another immediate challenge is social degradation. Sometimes violence and looting occurs almost immediately after a breakdown in effective governance. The only way to avoid this is to be well protected and travel a safe distance away from major cities.

2
Shelter & Protection: Where you establish a shelter depends mostly on where you get you water, food and supplies. Assuming that you need not travel your best bet is to build a walled community. Building a fortress though will come at a cost. Undoubtedly a walled village will attract attention. Many may begin to wonder what it is you are protecting. So be prepared for those kinds of challenges. I would recommend taking the risk and build a fortress that can withstand a siege. Make sure however that you have an adequately prepared militia in case a surprise attack occurs. This could mean requiring every able man and woman carry some form of personal protection wherever they go. You might have to lay down some specific rules of engagement to help avoid what could escalate into gun violence.

3
Acquiring Food & Supplies: A grueling challenge for many will include securing enough food and supplies for you family or community in a consistent manner. Raiding other communities is the simplest way to acquire supplies. However, if you would rather keep a healthy relationship with your neighbors I would highly recommend against this. The only other solution is to use whatever is available around you. Find local fresh water supplies closest to you or dig a well. Water seems to be the deciding matter of where villages and towns are established so make sure that water is close to you no matter where you decide to settle.

4
Power Supply: Without electricity society would be eradicated overnight. We simply cannot function without it. In a post-apocalyptic world you can rest assure that power grids will be shut down. So simpler solutions include solar-panels or wind turbines must be established. These are not hard to acquire or even make. A propeller, alternator, car battery, power converter and a little ingenuity is all you really need. Prepare to make a homemade generator now to avoid not being able to find these supplies later.

5
Communication: Any good tactician will tell you that communication is key to one's survival. So the first thing you will want to have set up is a reliable communication system. Assuming that satellites are still orbiting the earth, without the link provided by communication companies these satellites are useless. That means television, cellphones, telephones, internet, etc... Using radio frequency on the other hand is still the most reliable and practical communications hub as they don't require anything except an antenna and a little power. The downside is that you will not be able to carry on a private conversations. So if you are trying to create a new government in a post-apocalyptic world you may want to establish something a little more secure. Speaking in code is one way around this.

6
Transportation: When there is a societal breakdown finding adequate transportation will prove to be a challenge as most vehicles require gasoline. In a decimated world, fuel will most certainly quickly fall into short supply. To remedy this we simply need to take a few steps back in time. The simplest solution and most practical one is to have a horse or other domesticated animal at your disposal. Camels may not be a wise choice if you live in a colder climate. So be sure that your animal can withstand you local climate.

Other forms of transportation may include a bicycle. These are practical solutions as they are relatively fast and can get you around on most terrains. Assuming that every last drop of fuel is burned there shouldn't be any cars on the road.

7
Education: This is a factor that shouldn't be overlooked. The quickest way to re-civilization is through education because it eradicates superstitions or religious dogma and provides proper educated governance. It would be too easy to loose sight of educations importance in a society where everyone is concerned about surviving another season.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
