British Food

HOLY CARP!!!
Went to a British restaurant for lunch ...

1. Fish & Chips -- substituted chips for greens (salad), and still, extremely greasy fish that's deep fried more brown than golden.

2. "Chip Butty" -- basically chips sandwiched in a bun. Greasy, greasy chips.

3. Fried Mars bar -- seriously, battered and deep fried (probably with the same grease used to fry the fish) Mars candy bar.

4. Some ice cream dish with toffee syrup, crumpled short bread, salted peanuts, and some chocolate flake stick thingie.

That's British food. You poor, poor Britons!

Why, yes!
America. The only country that can make British food even worse.

And what kind of a moron goes into a fish and chip shop and substitutes chips for greens? That's like paying a prostitute and then saying 'can we just talk?'

English food is awesome!

But you have to know where to find it. Or cook it.

I'll agree.

Regarding the culinary traditions of other nations, I have had a lot--and I mean several times daily--a lot of Asian and Indian food, but not one single shrimp on any barbie.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I have never eaten a breakfast anywhere on earth as good as you can get in the UK.

American fish and chip shops are my idea of hell.

It should be declared a war-crime to serve coleslaw with fish and chips. Seriously.

We have fish & chips maybe once a fortnight or so from a chippy, never had selections 2-4.
More often at home we have baby potatoes and peas/runner beans with grilled breaded fish.

Best fish and chips I ever had was in Gimli, MB. No idea what the fish was, but they knew how to cook it. Best fries ever. Wrapped in paper and eaten on the frozen shores of Lake Winnipeg.

Lots of favorites, fish and chips, cottage pie, bangers and mash, toad in the hole, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding . . .

Oh, and the desserts, baked goods, and junk food! And anything blackcurrant.

Shepards pie was wonderful in England. I thought the Fish and chips was also. The best of the heart attack meals was Bangers and Mashed.
Plus there are many, many French restaurants in England for relief.

I seriously do not like grease laden food. Tasty, quickly fried at the correct temperature beer battered fish can be wonderful but it's a rarity. We have a VERY popular Irish food restaurant that serves this type of food. Everyone loves it because it is soooo caloric.

The restaurant is known for it's boxties(?).. these HUGE pancakes, stuffed with corned beef... and covered with gravy... :rolleyes2:

I go with my friends but usually just order cole slaw which is acceptable.

The English breakfasts pictured above do look awesome, and in my working days when I ate 4000 calories a day, I would have scarfed down some of those major, hunks of massive food,... I've found that sausages tho, are rarely fresh in restaurants.

and really, you aren't supposed to eat all that crap. I do LOVE grilled tomatoes.

Several ways to cook fish down here.

If fried, it's usually coated with a cornmeal batter. Some folks marinate before battering, some folks don't...a typical marinade will be McIlhenny-based or mustard-based. You also see a flour batter such as apple cites, sometimes with beer, sometimes not. We'll also take some fish, like alligator gar, and make builettes...those are usually rolled in flour and fried.

Some fish lend themselves well to a courtbullion or a red gravy. A good gaspergou cooks out enough water to help make its own gravy. These type of dishes are always served over rice.

Other types of fish, saltwater or fresh water, are very good smoked or grilled. We smoke gar, but shark is also good off the smoker.

And although it messes up the house, a good blackened redfish or bass is always welcome.

Had a great English meal. It was in the restaurant at Covent Garden and not the typical spot that tourists encounter.
On my most recent trip I thought the food was much better than on my previous trip there. I was only in the old part of London that trip.
Always like the true English breakfast, will have tomatoes with my breakfast this morning.

That only seems to be the invite to the wedding. Say's nothing about a reception or even a lousy sandwich and a pint.
