All I have to do to see dark sky is turn off all the lights in the house and go out in the front yard at night....

Yep. For me, it's on my deck... I can just look up, especially in winter when there's no humidity, and see the Milky Way and all the constellations. :)

Yep. Somewhere, there's an interview with the photographer, and he talks about all that he went through, to capture all of the footage. :)

Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii has some of the clearest/darkest sky in the world. The Observatory Visitor Center is about 3000m above sea level. The mountain (a shield volcano) forms a large column of air with almost no turbulence. The stars don't twinkle! The Milky Way is really in your face. Don't forget to bring a winter jacket. It gets really cold but its wort it.

About a hour away, is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you can see the most active volcano in the world dump lava into the ocean. Lots of great places fro just relaxing on the beach too.
