HOLY CARP!!!
|
Look outside, stare out into nature for 10 minutes, if you can manage to stay that patient. Than step inside and compare. Nature, even when considering only the select parts, just don't look all that good unless time-lapsed. |

HOLY CARP!!!
|
Time-lapsed video lapses away the boring, mundane parts of nature. Time-lapsing is just another form of blinder. Life without blinders will show LOTS of ugly, repulsive, stomach-churning stuff in nature. So blinder is an important aid to happiness, and knowing when to put on blinders is an important skill to maintain inner peace and sanity. |

That's nice, Ax. Pretty typical of you to piss all over anything anyone ever posts. Par for the course, really. I pity you. Often. |

Other than some things that animals and insects do to each other, I don't think I agree at all Ax. Of course, your place might be much tidier than mine. My favorite part of camping is just being still and taking in what is all around me. The breeze, the clouds, the sounds, pine needles drifting down, ripples on the lake...stuff like that. A very real time experience. |

Many of those scenes were quite stunning by themselves without time lapsing. |

I used to camp alone in the Mojave desert, for three and four days at a time. The first day and night, the mind goes crazy without TV, radio, music, traffic noise, and all the other noise associated with everyday living. Then a great peace and silence descends. There is the wind, the occasional cry of a hawk, and that's about it, really. At night, the stars look close enough to reach out and grab a handful of them. And the dreams are amazing. At dawn, having that first cup of coffee as the morning sun is burning the frost off of the sage... I think I could easily become a hermit. After four days, it's difficult to go back and live in society, again. |

If nature went by that fast, when would you have the time to soak it all in, enjoy the moment, get into the deep thoughts? Canīt watch the video, Frank, but it looks like itīs pretty awesome. When I saw the thread title, I was hoping it would be something like this I checked out one of the Canary Islands before, but not the one this volcano is on.

The best sky Iīve seen so far was camping out near Yosemite. I could have stayed up all night staring at that. I had figured that down here would beat that by far, but itīs actually only slightly less light-polluted than the sky I would see in Jersey. Still canīt figure that out, but it is pretty dissappointing.

Mmmmmmm, pie!

Ok, I did. Actually, it was so beautiful that I watched it for half an hour or so. But I didn't *look* ouitside, I *went* outside. I took a cup of coffee and walked out into the back yard and sat down under a big oak tree and just stared at nature.... I saw a pair of squirrels running around, playing, having a blast. A bunch of robins landed on the grass and began walking around looking for things to eat. It's the females that are so colorful I think, and the males that are less so, right? At any rate, they were beautiful to watch. They scattered however, when the huge hawk landed on a fence post about 30 yards from me, and just sat there looking everything over with those steely eyes... that scared the robins away, but it didn't bother the 4 deer I saw grazing along the edge of the grass by the woods. Nor did it seem to bother the flock of crows who landed right after the robins flew away - if you've never seen a crow up close, you don't realize how big they are for a bird. Then I came back into the house and sat down and stared into the house. I stared for a full ten minutes, just so I'd be giving Ax's test a fair shot. Nothing moved. Nothing happened. Nothing changed. And it hit me that I could set up a time lapse camera in here and let it run for the next 6 months, and every single snapshot would look exactly the same. Nature doesn't need time lapse photography to look good. More happened in one minute while I was outside than I could keep up with. |

Nothing of human endeavor restores my soul as much as a long hike in the woods or the desert or the beach.. well.. you get the picture. I used to camp in the desert quite a bit too, Frank.. out in Anza Borrego. It's an amazing place, with rythyms like nowhere else. |

I get it, Frank. Often, when the pressure starts getting to me, I saddle up a horse and run fences (for you city folk, that means I ride along all the fences and look for places that need fixing.) (For you damn yankees, "fixing" means "repairing")..... Nothing ever needs fixing though, because the work crews keep the fences in good shape. But I ride them anyway, because I get to see a lot of scenery, and nothing looks quite so beautiful as it does from the back of a good horse.. |

Haven't seen it, but I probably should. Thanks for the recommendation. Larry, that sounds great... My land borders a massive horse pasture, so it's like having horses, but without all of the work that goes along with it. At night, there's very little light pollution, so the sky is full of stars, the fields are full of fireflies... What an amazing world...

Maybe it's the difference between different sorts of people. I was watching a show on HGTV about a young couple hunting for a house. They were first time home buyers and lived in Coolidge Corner, a neighborhood in Boston. They completely limited themselves to this small neighborhood, feeling it was the perfect place for them. Even though it is actually a micro-neighborhood inside the larger Broookline neighborhood, they would not even consider moving three-minutes walk farther out. They ended up not even making an offer on anything because they couldn't get what they wanted for the price they could afford. Anyway, what struck me was that they talked about how just three minutes farther from the shops and restaurants where one of the homes (with everything they they wanted except the location) just didn't have the "energy" they craved from the Coolidge Corner area. I have such a hard time feeling that. I have no desire to live in a busy city, and pay the huge premiums that are required. I love the relaxed feel of the suburb. I suspect Ax maybe somewhat like that - drawing energy and vitality from the crowded, vibrant city. The same city that saps my energy. When I go into the city I see a lot of ugliness there. Maybe Ax sees past that and finds beauty and excitement there. Two different kinds of people. |

Spectacular. Thanks, Frank. And what a beautiful place that is. I'd love to be on that mountain. I don't live in 'big sky' country, but I can spend hours and hours sitting and watching the ocean. It is constantly amazing and inspiring, yet calming. |

Yep. I love the ocean, too... Friday, I leave for Cozumel. I can't wait. Being underwater, the only thing I hear is the crackling of the brine and my own breathing. No phones, no TV, no loudspeakers, no one talking, no screaming babies... None of it. Just blessed silence. Kincaid, you may be right. I've been to some attractive cities and enjoyed visiting them, and it's true there are a lot of conveniences that being in or near a major city offers. But actually living in one? No thanks... |

I need a big, busy city fix every once in a while. All the lights, the traffic, but mostly people watching. I love that. But I'm pretty sure I'd miss what I have now, if I were to live in such a place. |
