HOLY CARP!!!
As many of you probably know, there was a huge storm crossing the country the last several days, spawning tornadoes everywhere...

Last night, a tornado tore thru several counties in Virginia. It apparently started in CathyS's neck of the woods and headed northeast. It destroyed a middle school in Gloucester Virginia, killing 3 people in that general area. It continued northeast toward my house at the bay. But before it got there, it lifted back into the clouds, moved a little north of my area and then dropped back down to the ground crossing the Piankatank River and hitting Deltaville Virginia.

This is what's left of the church in Deltaville. That was all one brick building. The center section is gone. The pastor and his wife were in the church at the time the twister hit. Both survived uninjured.

Damage path hit the center of town and was about 2 football fields wide. I'm feeling pretty damn lucky I had no damage to my house. Might have to drop an extra twenty in the collection plate next week. :D

This is what's left of the community center.

Scary stuff, Improv! Glad to know your family is safe. Yes, an extra twenty, and some for the ones who were hit. Hubby and I have volunteered after such storms here.

Good to hear you're safe.

I don't understand why FEMA lets things like this happen.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Holy hell, man! Glad you're okay! I'd call having a tornado in Virginia complete B.S. if we didn't have one in Maryland a few years back. What a bizarre fluke.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

We were never physically in danger. She's in NYC this week and I came back to Richmond yesterday morning because I heard the storm was due in Richmond in the afternoon and didn't want the cat to freak out at home by himself.

Drove back down there this morning after a friend called me at 7:15 to ask if my place was ok. Damned if I knew. I was in Richmond. :D

http://www.vaemergency.com/newsroom/history/stats/tornado/index.cfm

Virginia had 578 tornadoes between 1950 & 2007 - about 10 per year

http://www.vaemergency.com/newsroom/history/stats/tornado/tornado_counts2004.pdf

High counts seem to match the population centers, I wonder if the low counts are because nobody saw them

NOAA agrees
Quote:

Many occurred in unpopulated areas or caused little property damage and therefore are not reported to the National Weather Service. Others may have been recorded as wind events instead of tornadoes. Based on these statistics, the actual average number of tornadoes that Virginia likely experiences in a year is between 15 and 20.

This will give y'all an idea of the storm path and how close it got to us.

The destroyed middle school is in the lower left. Deltaville is in the upper right. Purple line is the straight line tornado path.

This is what happens when you shut down the TV for an evening. We had no idea of the storm and they had some damage just up the road in Windsor and are saying it seemed to get going out of Williamsburg. Didn't hear about the path up north there till yesterday afternoon. So glad Yours & Plays' place was missed and everyone's okay. My son was playing in Suffolk yesterday and one of the other bands had come down from Gloucester. A bit late because of all the traffic, power vehicles, debris etc. Scary stuff - I thought I'd left all this back in Colorado.

I was nerding it up and tracking the storm all day on Saturday. DC was getting uber-lucky with the more dangerous storm cells to our north and south, including the one you're referring too. Insane pics man, glad you are safe.

I actually was browsing the radar and noticed a particular cell right on top of Raleigh with the same radar signature as what came through DC last summer, so I texted my friend who lived there just to make sure all was well. Had no idea that particular cell produced a tornado that wiped out a hardware store a few miles from my friend's place!

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Glad you're ok. The storms were terrible, and I was only on the far outer edge of it all. The mountains between me and NC kept the bad stuff over there, but man, did we ever get some serious wind and monsoon like rain. The worst hit out of it all i think was in North Carolina, though.
