Agreed. Otoplasty is something that we used to see a lot - in fact Mrs. George had it done, though not when she was a kid. For some reason it wasn't considered to be "plastic surgery" then, just something that you did when your ears stuck out too far. |

Yeah. "Plastic surgery for kids" is a hot pop culture news item these days so they shoe-horned this piece of non-news into that concept. Interesting that they had to lean on the "to stop the bullying" angle (another piece of hot pop culture news) rather than just calling it what it is - cosmetic so the kid will be more attractive. Nothing wrong with that, and a lot right with it. |

I think it is fine, but saddens me that such a cute kid had a need for this. In my family a brother, and this was back in the 70's, went back and forth about having this done. He never did. |

I know two guys who probably should have had it done. Both of them have ears that stick out like jug handles. They truly do look simian. I'm not trying to be mean, but when you look at either one of them, the first image that hits your mind is, "He looks like a chimpanzee!"

The bigger question is why you would put your child on the national news when she's going through something like this. |

Well, you put them in the spotlight to take the wind out of the sails of the bullies of course! I mean - now that she's made fun of herself, what can they POSSIBLY make fun of?! |

1. I don't see those ears as noteworthy. 2. I also don't see the decisions to "fix" (or "not fix") those ears as noteworthy. Live and let live. Judge a person by his deeds and character, not his looks. Etc. All these clichés apply. |

ZOOOOOM!

I don't see how this will "improve her life" very much, all she's learning here is how to roll over for popular opinion. If her ears are set back she'll be made fun of for her complexion. If she gets a tan they'll make fun of a lisp she has (either real or perceived), or how she laughs, or her height or clothes she wears or take your pick. Bullies find a way to put people in their place. A much better solution would be to learn how to handle them in a practical manner. But whatever, I don't consider the decision very controversial. |

As a thought experiment, what about a cleft lip (small one - unilateral incomplete)? It has minimal effect on anything other than appearance (note: I'm not talking about cleft palate or more severe forms of complete cleft lip). Difficulties in feeding can be worked around. Would having that repaired improve the child's life? For the sake of discussion, assume that the cleft causes no difficulty in eating, doesn't extend into the nose, etc. It's purely cosmetic. |

Amen. That said, I don't see the issue. Kids come out with lots of anomalies. If they are visible and can be fixed, why not? |

Same thing. Why make a kid who wants nothing more than to fit in stick out? It's funny, because I have a scar on my lip from a dogbite when I was 4 and have been asked if I had a cleft palate. |

I was in the Army with a guy who had a cleft palate. Good grief... If something like that can be surgically corrected, by all means, it should be done. |
