I just picked up Ben Folds albums Fear of Pop, Way to Normal and Stems and Seeds. Just curious if you had listened to any of them. Fear of Pop is very un-Ben like. It is technopop or electronica type stuff but I thought it was pretty cool and very listenable. The latter two albums are much more like his usual stuff. What is really interesting is that during the recording sessions for Way to Normal he recorded several "fake" version of the songs using different arrangements and effects. Those songs were "leaked" as a joke on a fan site. The final Way to Normal album is different of course and then on the Stems and Seeds album he re-released Way to Normal because fans wanted a less compressed recording and he put all the faked songs (I think) plus some add'l tracks on there. I have to get it all sorted out but several songs have two versions and maybe even three. Fun stuff! Edited by Kincaid, Apr 8 2011, 08:08 AM.

I was a big fan of Ben Folds Five. I liked the first album Ben Folds released after the band broke up (called Rockin' the Suburbs?), but sort of lost interest in him after that. I had Fear of Pop, but didn't like it that much. |

Honestly, I don't like most of the songs on those 3 albums...although I really, really enjoy "In Love" on Fear of Pop. It features a talking William Shatner with Ben Folds singing the chorus (and playing the piano) in the background. Great song. Mostly, I like Folds' earlier stuff...pretty much each album he did when it was "Ben Folds Five" (self-titled album; Whatever and Ever...; Rocking the Suburbs; Unauthorized Biography...; etc.). His "solo" album of Songs for Silverman album, along with "live" albums (Ben Folds Live; w/WASO...; Live at 54th...; etc) are terrific too. I think the Ben Folds Live album is probably my favorite of all the albums available out there, if I had to pick. His recent stuff is more miss than hit, IMO....... |

Dude, Rocking the Suburbs was a solo album. He had already disbanded the BF5. |
