I agree with the author of the article and not Baron-Cohen. Evil is a perfectly applicable moral and even "scientific" term to describe the privation of a good, or the misdirected acts within a hierarchy of moral values. E.g., the woman who abused the girls acted evilly in so far as she did not respect their human dignity and used them as objects to her own ends. She thus placed the good of her own convenience and her clean house over the good of the girls.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

The Borg are perfectly empathic with one another and yet they are the root of a lot of evil. Be careful what you wish for.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I wonder if Professor Baron-Cohen is related to that bloke who plays Borat.

I just checked - and yes he is. Call me shallow if you will, but I'm afraid I'm completely incapable of taking him seriously now.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Is it defined as such?
How do you determine it?
How do you measure it?

Not that science cannot use the term "evil," but to be "scientific," its definition needs to be objectively testable, if not measurable.

Are you suggesting people don't take Borat seriously? Posted Image How can that possibly be?

Sacha Baren-Cohen's brilliant if anything. He's sort of the Kaufman of these times ( I won't say "my generation" as I still remember Kaufman).

That's just so that we don't get sidetracked thinking this is Borat's relative, rather than Sacha Baren-Cohen's relative.
As for the article, I didn't read it. :)

Yes, the classical definition of evil is that is a privation of a good. Evil is not positive, but negative. (like heat is positive, cold is the privation of heat; light is positive, darkness is the privation of light).

You determine it through right reason. Take any two "goods" and compare them as to which is a higher order value: human freedom or economic benefit? your wallet or your life? safe streets around schools or the joy of high speed driving?

You measure it comparatively.

So where does a time out in your room and no cartoons for the rest of the day fall? In the mind of a four year old, absolute evil.

Are you trying to imply that Kaufman was brilliant?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Since the very first sentence of the article is a lie, I doubt the rest of it was much better.

Then it is not scientific because judgement is not scientific.
