My point is that the indwelling of the human spirit within the body is precisely a "vital function of a (human) organism." Because I believe that human life is neither purely physical nor purely spiritual, but rather is a type of life that is inextricably both, I would say that if a dictionary had a primary definition for life - human life, anyway - that did not include the spiritual component of death, then I'd say that the problem was with the dictionary.
