Puppy in Heat; Jagua haku!

HOLY CARP!!!
Yes, Marta Washington is becoming a señorita. Various developments in the past week point to her being about to go into heat. God help me.

Marta is too young to get the anti-pregnancy shot, and I don´t know yet if the spaying is a safe option here. So, for this, her first cycle, she´ll be unprotected.

Dogs here just run rampant. Whether they have owners or don´t (and sometimes that issue is debatable), they are usually not tied up, and fences here aren´t the type that keep animals.

I´m getting super stressed about how I´m gonna be able to deal with this. It looks like the cycle normally lasts about 2-3 weeks. When I leave during the day, I usually tie her up outside. Obviously I won´t be able to do this one she starts her cycle. So, I´m going to have to keep her inside the house all day. The way my house is, there is the front big room and hallway (where I have my kitchen), and my bedroom, and then we have a barrier in the middle of the hallway that leads to the back of the house (where the family I share the house with lives). From what people here tell me, if you keep her inside, a herd of male dogs will be circling the house, fighting, trying to get to her, and she will be going crazy trying to get outside. I´m trying to imagine this for 2 or 3 weeks, and it just seems like a nightmare. When I´m home I can at least try to send away the male dogs and keep her as calm as I can, but I worry about when I´m not here. People are used to dogs being a nuisance outside, but not in their own homes. I want to keep her as calm as possible (if that´s possible) while I´m not around.

The advice my host family gives is, take her way out back to the fields, tie her to a tree, and keep her there until she´s done (bringing her food and water, of course). So, basically, let her get repeatedly gang raped and then pregnant. People in my community take the least amount of responsibility as pet owners as is possibly imaginable. And as far as getting advice from a vet, I put far more trust in the advice of seasoned TNCR pet owners than I do any local vet.

So, anybody who has experience with a dog in heat have behavioural advice for me?? Or at least some empathetic anecdotes? I´m thinking I will buy diapers for her to wear while I´m gone (so she doesn´t mess all over the house) and for when I take her for walks (so she doesn´t get violated). :sword:

hi, opti,

a little bird told me about your pup and suggested i weigh in.

are there any veterinarians around there? i don't know if she can be spayed during her estrus, but i believe it is possible. are you able to have her spayed if it is possible? that would be the best option.

the only other option i can think of is to have her boarded at a secure facility during her heat.

(you have to be careful about where she goes--i know of a bitch who got pregnant while boarded because the male in the adjacent run was able to get his essential parts through the chain link fence--and she cooperated!)

keeping her locked up in the house while male dogs run around outside will not only be extremely stressful for her, but also she could find a way to get out, or they could find a way to get in. dogs have died from the stress, usually they will bloat.

so, my suggestion is to get her spayed immediately or put her in isolation at a trustworthy kennel.

Yikes, Opti! I have no suggestions. My dogs have always been neutered males. All I can tell you is to keep your eyes WIDE OPEN. I'm told that it doesn't take long. If you can crate her in your house, rather than just gating, it may help to keep her more secure.

I feel for you. Good luck.

What's an anti-pregnancy shot?

Can estrus be stopped with a doggie 'Pill' ?
You'd think if she's young enough to start secreting those hormones, she'd be young enough to get other hormones.

Poor little Marta. :(

The anti-pregnancy shot I mentioned might actually be the "pill." They say inyección, but it might actually be something you give them orally. I´ve heard from other Volunteers that it might not actually be a good thing to give them, whatever it is.

As for spaying, I know you can do it in the capital (a 6 hour bus ride from here). I might end up doing that, but I was talking to somebody tonight who told me that it´s not good to spay them before their first heat -- they can develop bladder problems.

Thanks for the advice everybody. A friend of mine (another Volunteer) totally eased my mind tonight, in offering to let me take Marta to stay with her while she´s in heat. My friend´s house has a securely-enclosed yard, and she has a puppy that could keep Marta company. I think I´m gonna keep her with me at the start and see how things go, and if it´s just too stressful take her over there. I wouldn´t trust anybody here but another American to take her for me.

The following is a post from a member of the IWCA on the subject of bitches in heat. Even with an enclosed yard, where there's a will, there's a way. Someone should always be with her and never take eyes off of her.

I know a delightful puppy who is the result of his 6 month old sire managing
to move his crate across a garage to get to the bitch- who was ALSO in a
crate! They managed a tie through 2 metal crates, and a health litter of 7
(labs) resulted. if *that* is possible, ANYTHING is;-p

Well, make sure you keep her away from my pup. He just started lifting his leg yesterday. Of course, we could start breeding TNCR puppies!

The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

The first true TNCR match!

Sorry LD, but she already has a boyfriend. They have sex on the lawn at night, when they think I´m not looking. He´s a good dog and all, but she´s just too young for this business.

You also may want a few diapers on hand.
