HOLY CARP!!!
Posted Image

This is the oldest color picture I've seen of my Dad's family. It must date to 1958 or '59, I'm guessing (My grandmother, far right in the back row, died shortly before I was born in 1960). Not sure where my grandfather is; either taking the picture or away on the dredging boat on the river. Dad's in the yellow shirt in the front row. Just a kid; probably didn't have a care in the world, until he had to become a family man not long after this must have been taken.

VERY cool.
There is a movement on Flickr right now around using vintage cameras and film. Kind of a backlash against the 'perfection' that can be obtained with modern equipment. I've really gained an appreciation for the nuances of film. Whatever this camera/film combo was, it seems to really pick up the blues and golds, but not a lot in between - it's an effect I've seen people try to capture in modern post processing, but it never looks this rich.

You're older than me Dewey! :D
Back on topic, the color clarity in that photo is real good. I grew up having mom and auntie take those instant polaroids (?sp) and those photos seem quite faded.

Great picture. Your dad, the kid in the yellow t-shirt, is such a strong image for me. I look at my son, who's 20, and his life right now. And then I think of my father, who, by the time he was that age, found himself with a change in plans, a move to Canada to start a new life and support a new family.

A different era, eh.

Oh man don't even get me started on that. When I think about where my parents, let alone my grandparents were at when they were my age it scares the hell out of me. Heck it's the same way with my cousins and they're the same age as me.

Ugh.

Great picture, btw, Dewey. Really gives you things to think about.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Great photo Dewey. Your dad is probably 10 years younger than mine, based on how old he looks in that picture. How old is he now?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Great family picture, Dewey. I'm guessing it was Kodachrome to have held up so well.My parents' wedding pictures that were taken in 1945 still look very good today.

89th, color was actually invented in a secret government program during WWII and saw expanding use after the war. Prior to that time, the entire world was black and white. Any images you see of color, such as post cards and paintings from that prior time, were surreptitiously added later.

It screams "Kodachrome" to me...and unfortunately, Kodak has discontinued it. :mad2:
