Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

[nerd]Their description of steampunk, aside from the very end (goths who want to wear brown for a change) is pretty off the mark. The only thing it has in common with cyberpunk is the suffix[/nerd]

That is absolutely ****ing ridiculus. Kind of reminds me of Octobriana, though.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

hey thanks for that. I've never quite understood what the term meant. That works for me.

Eh, it's just a specific branch of sci-fi that's gained a lot of traction in the past couple of years. Its theme is based on a "retro-history" about what the 19th century would be like if the industrial revolution (and especially electric power) never took off: everything's still powered by steam and other simple mechanical devices. I have no idea why the craze is so heavy now, though. For the most part, the kind of folks I see getting really into this stuff are the ones who could just as easily have been painting their faces white and listening to Slayer a decade ago.

Cyberpunk's entirely different. It was the first science fiction subgenre to 1) be based in a future much nearer to present day than Asimov's stuff, or Heinlein's, or any of the old traditional sci fi writers; 2) focus not on aliens or offworld colonies or robots, but telecommunication and the information age; and 3) blend this stuff together with the noir style, and hard-boiled detective novels. (That third one makes it kind of unique, and I have no idea what it has to do with the other two but my theory is that since William Gibson was one of the first writers to go this route and he had a noir thing goin on in his stories, everyone just copied off him from there on out.)
I cite irreconcilable differences.

thanks again. :thumb: cyberpunk I knew to be a literary term, but the steampunk thing puzzled me. I keep seeing references to steampunk jewelry, for example. I get that now, all the recycled gears and stuff.

you explain things well, you know.
