See http://livingsocial.com/deals/21336?ref=conf-jp&rpi=3900964 This may be the biggest deal offered in this manner to date. It just might open the floodgates to other national retain chains using such promotional venues -- Loews, Target, Walmart ... who knows, may be even Mercedes Benz and Tiffany's may jump onto the Internet coupon bandwagon one day. Another thought: Google tried to buy Groupon. May be Amazon.com is eyeing to buy LivingSocial in response, and is doing this deal as some sort of an exploratory step. The LivingSocial salesperson who got them this deal might get a big bonus and a big promotion. |

Just checked the number again: 1,301,296 deals sold. At $10 a pop, that's $13 million in one day. Definitely a big deal for a small startup like LivingSocial. |

Was that limited to one per customer? |

Yes, the Amazon.com gift card deal was limited to one per person. (Well, to the extent that people don't "cheat" by establishing more than one account per person.) |

Ax - not to discount (pun intended) your post......but what's the big deal of this? I saw many friends posting about this, but LivingSocial (and Groupon, et al) have been posting deals like this for a long time. Often savings of $50 or more..... Maybe because it's a straight up $10 discount compared to other deals which are product/service based? |

Never has a retailer anywhere as big (and anywhere as popular) as Amazon.com offers discount coupons in like manner. Also, all the deals I've seen from LivingSocial never allowed more than 1000 to be bought. They seemed to have pulled out all the plugs for Amazon.com -- 1.3 million coupons sold. That's three orders of magnitude beyond what they used to do before this deal. I see it as a game-changer for the Internet coupon industry. |

Are most of the deals geared to large metro areas? The Amazon deal would be popular because it's not geographically specific. I see no deals even close to where I live.

Yes ... the likes of Groupon and LivingSocial started out promoting location-specific deals; their clients were, and largely still are, small, local mom-and-pop shops. (I cannot see how it could be otherwise, since no big national retailers would have wanted to deal with such new business models run by small time startups back then.) Amazon.com really is the first national retailer I've seen partnering up with the likes of Groupon/LivingSocial. Wegman's once offered coupon deals on "gift boxes" (forgot whether it was via Groupon or LivingSocial), but Wegman's size and reach is minuscule compared to Amazon.com, and Wegman's deal was limited to only a few pre-packaged "gift boxes." |

I agree Ax, it is a major marketing move to capture the segment of the population who perhaps never ordered anything, let alone even heard of, Amazon before! (Actually, that's just sour grapes that I didn't get in on the deal. )
