As you may remember, we went to Cuernavaca, Mexico in mid December. Cuernavaca is about an hour south of Mexico City by car. It is known as the 'City of Eternal Spring' because of the near perfect weather year round. It is high enough in the mountains not to be hot (as opposed to, say, Acapulco which is only 2 hours away) but not so high as to be chilly like Mexico City can be.

Its a very old city - it was popular with the Aztecs and Cortes himself built a palace here back in the early 1500s. It and the Cathedral are among the oldest European-built structures in the Americas.

One of the main highlights of the trip was the house itself, so I'm dedicating part 1 of this trip report to it.

The house is right in the center of town, four stories high, and built in that lovely Spanish style that integrates indoor and outdoor space. Here's a picture from the street:

As an example of the indoor/outdoor integration - in the photo above, look at the second floor, right above that exterior wall. That's one of the living rooms, which is opens completely to the outside. The following two photos show how it works. Note the rugged floor giving it the feel of a patio.

Here are two more photos of that room which show off the Mexican decor.

Here's the kitchen and dining room.

And how gorgeous is that stove.

On the 3rd floor is another living room. The furnishing is pretty basic.

But it has some nice details:

On the same floor was a bedroom where the boy slept.

It had its own bathroom with a fantastic tub. Love the mermaid and merman (merpeople?)

On the 4th floor was the master bedroom, which was just lovely. Here are two photos:

In that second picture above note the winding staircase - that goes up to a terrace. Here's a better picture of it.

Here's one from above, look at the light hitting that wall.

Posted Image

I love the little details.

Here's a sitting bench in the master bath.

Here are pictures of two of the staircases in the house.

This one cracked me up. It looks like he's telling you a joke. C'mon... it was funny. Don't you get it?

Terrific house, Jon! Love the rooms and the extra pic of the stove. Very cool.

I especially like the pics of you and your son. He adores you. I can tell.

Nice. Found the "stove" to be most intriguing. How exactly does that oven work?

I'm not big on the Mexican colours and decorations (ok for vacation), but the house itself is an interesting layout.

What else was there to do in Cuernavaca?

That isnt an oven - its just a stove (on the other side of the kitchen was a modern oven built into a wall).

Re Mexican colors, I like them in a Mexican house - but wouldn't use them here.

Re Cuernavaca - wait for the other trip reports! But I will say its not a beach town so it gets a different kind of tourist. Cuernavaca has a lot of spanish immersion schools so that draws a lot of them but that's obviously not what we were doing.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Exquisite house, more like an art gallery. I love the masks.
Your little guy cracks me up. I can remember our own jabbering on and on, us nodding, "Mmm-Hmm, yes, really ...". Those were the days.
