I don't go for the vulgar stuff myself.

I don't see how this guy is a representative of conservatives.

I think the Hollywood knuckleheads figure if this guy doesn't like them he must be an evil conservative.

He is just poking fun at self-important twits. So they figure he must be in cahoots with Sarah Palin.

Conservatives rally behind Ricky Gervais

By Paul Bond

Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:28pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - British comedian Ricky Gervais is the new darling of political conservatives thanks to the fusillade of insults he directed at the aghast celebrities attending the weekend's Golden Globe Awards.

Delighted at the sight of Gervais belittling Hollywood elitists who they maintain do likewise to them regularly, the right-wing blogosphere lit up with positive reviews, even while more traditional media was critical of Sunday's telecast.

Had Gervais "been as relentless in ripping apart Sarah Palin, her young children, Jesus Christ or George W. Bush, today the comedian would be celebrated as 'edgy' and 'courageous'," noted John Nolte, editor of the Andrew Breitbart website Big Hollywood.

Instead, the Washington Post said Gervais "crashed" and the New York Times said he was "merciless" and in "bad form." Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the event's organizer, said some of the things Gervais said "were totally unacceptable."

Nolte, though, likened Gervais' jabs at various actors and the HFPA as a much-needed "sucker punch" leveled against elite bullies who do likewise to middle America on a routine basis.

At Pajamas Media, a conservative and libertarian news organization, CEO Roger Simon wrote that Gervais "has been roundly attacked for being rude to practically everyone, including the HFPA, whose event it was. Problem is: he was right, particularly about the HFPA."

The U.K's right-leaning Daily Mail weighed in via a lengthy, positive analysis of Gervais' performance that was headlined: "Bravo, Ricky Gervais! A risque' attack on self-loving Tinseltown."

"The flock didn't know what to do because it had never encountered such risky mockery," author Quentin Letts wrote, praising Gervais for his rebellious performance.

"Hollywood and its power brokers hate a rebel. It is a place of groupthink and almost terminal political correctness."

On Sunday night Gervais earned himself a cult following around the world, Letts opined, as "the man who went to Hollywood and told them what a bunch of self-regarding boobies they are."

Never heard of him. Never watched a "Golden Globes Award" show. Probably never will.

If there was 10 seconds worth watching, I figure someone will either post or email me a link in due time.

He was pretty funny -- vicious, but can't say I feel sorry for a room full of self important a55holes. It was basically the same sort of stuff from the old Friars roasts (which were a heck of a lot more vicious).

I didn't think it was that vicious. I've said worse.

I think the English have different standards when it comes to rudeness. When American actors want to be rude they make every other word a profanity, and make the veins on their necks stand out, a skill they clearly have to secretly practice in front of the old mirror. Totally unnecessary, of course.

Incidentally, before all you chaps embrace Mr. Gervais too much, you might want to watch this.

Would have been completely at home in a Roast, would also be fine in an MTV ceremony ... but seems a touch out-of-place in a Golden Globe award ceremony.

Not as out of place as Robert Downey Jnr. in a Sherlock Holmes movie.

Should have been Ben Stiller.

The advantage with that choice would have been that Ricky Gervais could have walked into the Globes, thrown a hand grenade into the crow in lieu of jokes, and almost certainly have been let of with nothing more than a strongly worded caution and subsequent Knighthood.

I mean, it's Ricky Gervais - it's not like it's an unknown quantity...
They asked him to host, and knew at some level what they were getting into.
The promos leading up to the show for the last couple weeks poked fun at the fact that he had no idea how to relate to these people, and wasn't sure what to say/do, even being unsure why they'd let him host.
I haven't yet seen what he said - but Gervais is hilarious (any fan of the Office knows this), and he's been hilarious in every movie I've seen him in.
He's funny...

He has the wonderful capacity to laugh at himself -- the scene in Extras where David Bowie sings about him as a little fat man with the pug nosed face
says it all. :lol2:

Okay, that was pretty funny. I especially liked the Hugh Hefner jokes. Don't ask me why I felt bad for Tom Cruise. The guy's a freak. I guess I just like his movies.

Louis C.K. is my favorite american comedian. He has a show called Louie on FX network, and Gervais has a small part in it as his doctor. He pushes the envelope in that show sort of like he does there. I'm sure Gervais writes that material on Louie himself, it's hilarious. (As long as you have a sick sense of humor like I do.)

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I love Louis CK.
He's brilliant and a legend in the comic community. Every year, he throws away all his material and starts fresh, with the goal of having a new hour for an HBO special by the end of the year. He always makes his goal and it's always brilliant. He's a good example of the intersection of great talent and a lot of hard work.

Oh come on. That is some pretty tame stuff. Quite funny, actually.

Did you see him in "the Invention of Lying" with Ricky Gervais?

Just watched the video - pretty funny, though some of it went over my head since I am so far removed from celebrity gossip.

What I don't get is the 'conservatives rally'. What part of that was political?

Funniest line was the one about airbrushing the Sex In The City II poster...

I think the "Conservatives rally" comment is pointed at Ricky making fun of some of the furthest left in the country: Hollywood.

I don't think his comments were specifically political, but he was making fun of a very self-righteous group that sort of considers itself elite.
They're mostly left-leaning, though I'm not sure they even understand that connection. You're right - it isn't political.
Why can't we make fun of Hollywood for simply being a bunch of knobheads? Why does that intrinsically have to become an anti-left, pro-right political statement?

I just watched the clip, and I'm absolutely loving it.
It was pretty tame, though, to publicly call Tom Cruise out as being gay is brilliant (we've all known it for a long time).
