1. Why am I not at all surprised that Brits sent their women to fight?

2. It ain't the Italian men that still wear skirts.
3. In all of the wars fought in those benighted Isles commonly called British, the Irish always came in second.

Throw in a few more f-bombs and you could be an Irish economist.

It doesn't help the argument, because it's flawed at the foundation.
One need only compare the WNBA, and MTV's Lingerie Football League to see which business models for women's professional sports work.

Sadly, this has nothing to do with equality, and everything to do with the opposite.

My point is that women may have trouble competing on the battlefield.

If it were easy for them to compete physically - they would.

Imagine a female baseball pitcher who was good enough for the major leagues. Plenty of teams would be willing to sign her. She would make a fortune.

She doesn't exist, if she did the market would demand that she play.

Michelle Wei drew big ratings just by trying to compete with men.

I have no doubt that there are a few women that could compete in just about any major sport.

But in general it's not even close.

Based on this I think it's fair to say on the front line battlefield it would be slaughter.

And of course the front line isn't what it used to be. We now have people in Omaha flying airplanes in Afghanistan.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

There's an old saying they used to teach the English soldiers, apparently exclusively: Don't turn up to a gunfight carrying a football.

John, I have this british friend who insists that the way to spell the word "women" is "wimmen", and to support his claim he says all I have to do is listen to the news reporters on the BBC and you can hear them plainly saying "wimmen" so therefore that proves the proper spelling is "wimmen" and his people invented the english language so that's the end of it.

What should I tell him?......

Tell him he must have a bit of Irish in him. Either that or his mother did.

Copper, I wasn't disagreeing with you.
I was making the exact same point - the WNBA was supposed to be on par with the NBA, and not be about flaunting women around. It failed horribly.
Totally different level of intensity and excitement watching women's, and men's basketball - which is why at the professional level it doesn't work. It does work if they're all wearing lingerie though, which is hilarious (hilarious that men watch it...).

My point was that there are two important considerations - the physical component, which many have brought up (some standard set of physical tasks that anyone on the front-line has to be able to complete), and the "hey, how does this affect everyone else on my team?" component - where, if we're honest and agree that men and women are different, we realize that even if the physical component is easily met, there may be other factors to consider in terms of "is this a good decision for the unit?"

OK, so that takes care of war and sports.

Now let's move it inside to the office and workplace.

You go first.

The lingerie football league isn't too bad.

You could put most of the WNBA gals out there in pasties and g-strings, and they'd have to pay men to watch them....

It's not a question with a black and white answer. I believe a compromise of the "yes or no" answer would be appropriate here.

Let only bull dykes serve on the front lines. Hell, we don't have to worry about DADT any more.

All of Larry's lines of reason, and they are good lines, go out the door.

NS: I was thinking the same, from the other direction - women serve with gay men. :)

I agree that this is a very complex and nuanced issue.

Regardless, I think the military is under pressure to distill it down to a yes or no.
