So, I'm taking pottery at the Academy. Here are a couple of early pots that I did some glaze experiments on. (The pots are too thick, the "pitcher" is a little squatty - more like a gravy boat, and its handle is a little big for the size of the pot :D, but I do like what happened with the glaze. (unfortunately, the best thrown pots didn't have the best glaze on them) I did wax resist on both of these - so I could get the crisp lines for the design.

I did a hand built platter - supposed to be an orchid dish, where I can put multiple orchids attached to driftwood, and I will be able to keep a puddle of water in the bottom so the humidity stays high. I'm not sure I like the shape, but I love the way the glaze turned out (it's two glazes layered)

I'm going to miss the arts and crafts studio when we go home!

Aqua, the throwing part is getting faster and easier (and man, there is something so COOL about squooshing your hands around in clay). The glazing is easy if all you do is wax the bottom and dunk, but the detailed stuff takes a bit longer. It probably took me an hour to wax around those leaves and flowers, and then another hour or so to glaze them - there are two colors on the leaves and about 4 on the flowers, plus I had to paint the glaze on the outside. (I poured the glaze into the inside, that was pretty quick)

Wonderful stuff Jodi. The appearance and "neatness" belie your comment about "early experimentation." Looks pretty sophisticated, if you ask me.

But, then you didn't ask... :lol2:

Oh, yeah, how did you get that handle to look grooved?

George, it looks grooved because it *is* grooved! (I carved it after I attached the handle)

Beautiful!

I took a pottery class once. Shudder. I made some thick, ugly things.

Me too. My early 'experiments' did not look like jodi's.

Really nice work, jodi. I love love love your pitcher/gravy boat. You must be having so much fun. :)

End of May, early June. I'm having a blast. I get up each morning, looking forward to what I'm going to play with at the shop. I signed up for a stained glass class in a couple weeks...

I have tried pottery myself many years ago, but it looked very pathetic compared to yours. Excellent work!
