I'm finally being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, and getting a phone with work - basically I pay for the phone, and the company pays for the plan (phone + data)

Anybody got any recommendations? I'm a complete neophyte when it comes to this stuff.

Yes.

Use it to post here. Avoid the pron. Work people frown on that sort of thing.

HTC EVO (if you're on Sprint).
The Motorola Droids are really nice Android phones as well.
The iPhone is really nice too.
If you don't need/want a touchscreen smart-phone, get any run of the mill phone, and you'll likely be happy with it.

TURN THAT THING RIGHT THE HELL OFF AS SOON AS YOU LEAVE THE BUILDING EVERY NIGHT.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Since you're paying for the actual phone itself, the Blackberry Curve is uber-cheap now, but a very good (quick, good battery life, etc) phone for basic internet, email, and typing on a tactile QWERTY keyboard.

If you dont mind spending $100, you can get a nice touchscreen phone (I have the HTC Droid) but many of the options out there, Droid and iPhone, are great.

I won't have any trouble with that. My boss might, but I won't.

I think I'm veering towards the Motorola Droid. I've got a friend who sells the things as part of some kind of home-based business type of scam, and she's not allowed to carry the iPhone, so that's out, but she does carry pretty much everything else.

John,

My son and wife both love their droids. The real question is which carrier to use. This depends on exactly where you expect to use the phone most frequently. For most (but not all!) of the country Verizon has the best coverage and reliability. Talk to friends in your area whose usage is similar to your expected usage of both data and voice. Don't rely on the various coverage maps that the carriers provide, they are not accurate.

Regards,
Chris
