Will the apps for iPhone work on Android? I just received an email that Behr paint for has an iPhone app. I'd love to have it on my Droid but I don't know if it will work. I'm thinking not. If not, why? Because of the different OSs on the phones?

An iPhone App won't work on an Android.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

No, apps do not cross over.

They don't work, because it's a different programming/operating language. KB, would know more...

I find that both the Droid and iPhone have similar apps, games, etc. It's a growing market only to become more robust!

BTW - if you are looking for this feature (see link), you can just go there in your droid's internet browser, since this is flash-based: http://www.behr.com/Behr/home#

There are now four main operating systems for smartphones, so an app developer has to develop four separate apps, just to hit 50% of the mobile market.
E-readers, iPads, and other tablets aren't accounted for in this (they're the other 50% of the mobile market).

So no - android apps won't work on iPhone, but they easily could if Apple would play nicely with Flash.

iPhone apps are written in a proprietary languages called "Objective C," while Android apps can be written in either Java, or Actionscript (the scripting language behind Flash, Flex, and AIR).

Sorry - I just did extensive research on this, and wrote a long "recommendation" for our company on future mobile trends, so this is fresh in my brain right now. Just deleted the bit that was way too verbose.
In short - no, your iPhone app won't work on Android - but if it's a "popular" app at all, it's likely developed for both platforms, so just check the Android marketplace.

iPhone apps are written in a proprietary high quality easy to use language called "Objective C," while Android apps can be written in either you-get-what-you-pay-for-second-string Java, or proprietary obscure probably-soon-to-disappear Actionscript (the scripting language behind Flash, Flex, and AIR).

I ran it through the spell check for you.

LMAO

That's rich... Actionscript "obscure," and Objective-C "high quality," and "easy to use."

What next - markup languages are a thing of the past?

The spell check doesn't lie.

I can't argue with that! :)

We can at least agree that both of our chosen languages are in IBM's annual "top 18 programming languages" article...

That article however, is ridiculous for a number of reasons - so that might not be the best thing for me to have brought up.

Actually my chosen language is whatever I'm using at the moment. The thing that sets me off is the word proprietary. It has lost any meaning it might have once had other than "not the thing that I am selling today".

Most perceptive, Copper.

The word proprietary may not be 100% accurate, but it isn't far off.
Objective C is today, primarily used only for Jobs products, including the Cocoa API, and iOS.

If Jobs hadn't been the founder of NeXT, and NeXT hadn't made Objective-C more widely known/used with the Openstep standard, then perhaps it wouldn't seem so closely related to a prototype of the SteveJobs object. ;)
(Yes, as a JS developer I just made a "classless" reference to prototypal languages)

Man, I'm hilarious on all sorts of levels today...

The first love was 370 assembler. After that none of the others really matter, they are just tools.

For me the real problem with Android development is the lack of a decent user interface builder.

I want to drop a button or text field on the screen and slide it around to where I want it. The Microsfot Visual environment has done this nicely forever. The iOs development environment and the Windows Phone 7 Environment both have this.

I used Eclipse for years. It's OK, but the Android SDK is junk - so far.

Copper, since Android will support flash, you can develop Android apps in AIR - this is my chosen way, because who wants to work in Eclipse outside of the more proprietary builds like Zend and FlashBuilder?
We are an Eclipse shop - so I know what you're saying, and Eclipse, while a decent IDE, is no longer my favorite.
It's great in the form of FlashBuilder though, and developing AIR and/or Flex apps is easy enough, while the "design" view allows you to do just as you say - drag/drop visual elements from a menu on the left, to your "stage." Essential if you're visual like me.
