I liked this story from yesterday's Post-Gazette...

Steelers Nation: No ticket to game? No problem

Steelers fans engage in tailgating rituals before a game at Heinz Field.

We all have a to-do list of things to accomplish before we get too old or kick the bucket. One item on my list was to see a football game in Pittsburgh.

I have been a Steelers fan since the dark days of 1969. I became one not because I lived in Pittsburgh (I grew up in Joplin, Mo.) but because I played on a lousy little league team.

After finishing in last place one year, my attention turned to football. One Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals (lousy in their own right) were playing the Steelers and one of the announcers commented that the Steelers were the "worst team in the NFL." I took an instant liking to them. Maybe I could relate to their futility.

The next year, they drafted Terry Bradshaw and their climb to greatness accelerated. But despite years of psychotic devotion, I never tried to see a Steelers home game until 2008, when I had a Sunday morning revelation in Virginia to attend the Ravens-Steelers game the following night.

I made the trip sans ticket but had enough smarts to make hotel reservations, even though I had little idea of where my hotel in Bethel Park was located in relation to Heinz Field.

At the hotel, they said to park at a nearby mall and take the trolley in. All that was left was finding a ticket. I told myself I had $80 to spend and if I couldn't find anything, I'd watch the Monday night game from a sports bar.

The first scalper I saw was a smooth talker charging an insane price. He had a lower level seat (face value $80) for which he wanted $250.

I must have blanched noticeably, because he immediately said he had an upper deck seat for $150. When I told him I was hoping to pay just $80, he replied, "Oh, you won't find anything for THAT price."

I headed toward the closest parking lot to the stadium and figured I'd just ask around -- who knows, maybe someone had an extra ticket. I chatted with one group of fans enjoying themselves, mainly to ask about their beer tap concoction.

It consisted of a washtub big enough to hold a keg, plus a welded pipe contraption to anchor the beer tap. In my twisted mind, it looked like something a fellow Jimmy Buffett Parrothead would conjure up. I was right, which led to an instant male-bonding moment.

When I told him I had driven up from Richmond without a ticket, he said to join his group to tailgate -- any Steelers fan willing to make a journey like that was welcome. He offered me a sausage dog and a beer, and I probably shook hands with two dozen people to whom I repeated my travel story. Every one of them seemed amazed that I had made the trip but welcomed me to "da 'Burgh."

Still in need of a ticket, I resumed venturing toward the stadium, stopping people and explaining my situation. Every group I asked would offer me something to eat and drink, then would spread the word on my behalf.

I couldn't believe how outgoing everyone was or how helpful they were trying to be, especially since I didn't know a soul. Good Lord, I was going to gain five pounds from all the food shoved at me, not to mention all the drinks passed my way.

Then a gentleman approached. He was a season-ticket holder and had an extra ticket located in the end zone. The ticket had a face value of $76. Imagine my shock and surprise when he only wanted $75. As he put it, he'd rather sell it to a fan than a scalper.

So there I was, pleasantly stuffed, slightly buzzed, and armed with my game ticket and Terrible Towel. It was now time to join the mountain of fans and enter the stadium. As the game went on, I realized how intense Steelers fans (including me) can be.

By the time it was over, my buzz had worn off and had been replaced with exhaustion from watching a 23-20 overtime victory. Oh, and I was suffering from "Terrible Towel Arm," which occurs when Steelers fans relentlessly wave their towels to raise the intensity.

The game ended at 12:30 a.m., and I made it back to my hotel at 2, collapsing on my bed. When I woke up, I felt like I had been run through the washer spin cycle. I couldn't remember the last time I felt so drained ... except maybe from the last Buffett concert I attended.

Got around to watching that, R2. I loved it, more so because I helped design the lighting of the FPT. I'm now working on the SHT.
