Surgeon #1: There's an ortho guy at my place who is a high utilizer of the OR. His utilization is high, not because he does a lot of cases (he does do a lot of cases, to be sure) but because he's so damned slow. He also has a terribly annoying habit of showing up late. Not a lot late (at least for 1st cases), just enough to be annoying. He arrives for 8 AM surgery, in street clothes, at 8:10. Yesterday, at 7:55, the OR started looking for him (there was missing paperwork on his patient), and when he walked in at 8:10, he said, "Yeah, I got your pages, but at 8 AM I ignore them because I know it's you looking for me." If I ignored a page for 15 minutes, there would be phone calls made and letters written, particularly if it was OB looking for me. Last week, we started an afternoon case that lasted 6 hours. It was supposed to start at 3, it started at 5 because this asshat was late. At the end of the case, he said, "Wow, this is probably the biggest case we did at this OR today." My comment was, "Yep, probably is. Good thing we started late." Surgeon #2: Met a new guy last night. 2 years out of training, trying to build a practice. He had a 91 year old lady for a broken hip that he scheduled at 3:30. He said he'd be there at 6:30 and (since she was a bit demented and 91 years old) he'd have a medical doc look at her, her labwork, and make sure that all's OK. He showed up at 6:20, with all the paperwork checked out, and medical clearance on the chart. I got her off to sleep at 6:35, and, because it's a hip, it took a while to position her. He cut at 7:10 - fairly typical for this kind of case. At 7:25, he asked "What time did I make the incision?" I like it when a surgeon asks that. She hit the recovery room at 7:37. I hope we see more of this guy.

Oh just you wait. Once that new guy gets nice and comfortable, he'll be strollin' in 10, 20 minutes late in no time. ![]() |
